What it is used for
This set is designed to cover the full range of human and creature skin tones you need in figure painting projects. The six colours can be combined with each other and with other Playmarkers or AK Interactive acrylic paints to expand the palette and achieve more complex transitions and effects.
- Wargame miniatures: fast and precise painting of faces, hands and exposed skin areas on 28–32 mm figures.
- Scale figures: base colour and first layers on historical, fantasy or sci-fi figures.
- Dioramas: direct application on characters and organic elements with full stroke control.
- Cosplay and props: touch-ups on resin or plastic pieces that replicate skin, prosthetics and masks.
- SFX and art: painting surfaces that require natural or fantastical flesh tones (Zombie Skin, Animal Green).
- Sketches and colour tests: quick palette checks before transferring them to the final work.
How to use it
- Priming: apply a white primer to the figure before you begin. Playmarkers perform best on a white base, as skin tones are translucent in thin layers and the light base enhances their luminosity.
- Shaking: shake the marker well and press the tip on a test surface until the paint flows evenly.
- First coat: apply the base colour (for example, Light Skin or Dark Skin) with smooth, even strokes. Work in thin layers to control coverage.
- Successive coats and blending: while the paint is still wet you can blend colours directly on the figure to create transitions. You can also layer dry coats to build tonal depth.
- Details and shadows: use Pink Skin for flushed areas, Black Skin or Dark Skin for deep shadows, and Animal Green for creature skin or fantastical effects.
- Drying: drying is fast. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next to avoid lifting the previous layer.
- Weathering and varnishing: once dry, the paint accepts washes, pigments and any ageing product without risk of lifting the base colour. You can apply any varnish (matt, satin or gloss) to seal and protect the finish.
- Cleaning: close the markers tightly after each use. If the tip dries out, moisten it with water and press gently until the flow is restored.
Usage tips
Application order for realistic skin
Always start with the mid tone (Light Skin or Dark Skin depending on the character) as the base colour. Add Pink Skin to cheeks, ears and areas of tension, and darken with Dark Skin or Black Skin in cavities and shadows. This three-tone approach gives convincing results even without advanced experience in Non-Metallic Metal or wet-blending techniques.
Full compatibility with the AK Interactive system
The colours in this set are fully compatible with the rest of the AK Interactive range. You can mix the paint from the marker on a wet palette with Standard paints or use the Playmarkers for touch-ups and corrections over airbrushed layers. Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, stocks the full Playmarkers range should you need to expand your palette with additional references.
Frequently asked questions
What surfaces can I use these markers on?
The Playmarkers AKM107 adhere well to plastic, resin, metal and wood. For best results, always apply a white primer before painting. Use on highly porous unprimed surfaces is not recommended, as the paint is absorbed unevenly.
Can I apply washes or weathering techniques on top?
Yes. Once dry, the paint from the Playmarkers resists handling and allows you to apply washes, filters, pigments and any ageing product without lifting the base colour. For extra security, apply a coat of matt varnish between the paint and the weathering.
Is the finish matt or satin?
The general finish of the Playmarkers is satin, although it may vary slightly depending on the pigment of each colour. Whatever finish you prefer for your project, you can apply any varnish (matt, satin or gloss) on top without damaging the paint.
Can the colours be blended directly on the figure?
Yes. While the paint is wet you can blend tones directly on the surface to create smooth transitions between, for example, Light Skin and Pink Skin. You can also mix them on a wet palette and apply the result with the marker tip or a brush.
What is Animal Green for in a skin tones set?
Animal Green (AKM014) is intended for the skin of fantastical creatures: orcs, trolls, reptilians, aliens or any fantasy or science fiction character. Combined with the other tones in the set, it allows you to create natural transitions between green and flesh for very convincing results on wargame miniatures or fantasy figures.
