What it's used for
This set is aimed at any creative discipline where metallic finishes take centre stage. The six colours can be combined with each other and with the rest of the Playmarkers range to expand the palette of tones and effects without switching tools.
- Scale military models: cannons, tracks, armour plating, engines and metallic details on vehicles.
- Wargame miniatures: armour, swords, shields, firearms and accessories for fantasy or science fiction figures.
- Dioramas: metallic elements set in ruins, workshops or battle scenes.
- Cosplay and props: quick application of metallic finishes on foam, thermoplastic or 3D-printed resin pieces.
- SFX effects: painting prosthetics, masks and accessories that require a convincing metallic appearance.
- Sketches and rapid prototyping: agile prototyping of pieces before a final finish.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a white primer to the piece to ensure the best coverage and colour accuracy of the metallic paint. Surfaces must be clean, dry and grease-free.
- Priming the marker: shake the marker well before use. Press the tip against a test surface several times until the paint flows evenly.
- Application: paint with smooth, controlled strokes. The brush-type tip allows you to work both large areas and fine details. You can apply several coats once the previous one is dry to increase intensity.
- Blending and transitions: while the paint is still wet you can blend and mix colours directly on the piece to create gradients and lighting effects.
- Drying: drying is fast. Allow each coat to dry completely to achieve the best result.
- Weathering and finishing: once dry, the paint accepts any weathering product without risk of lifting the base coat. Apply your preferred varnish (matt, satin or gloss) to seal and adjust the final finish.
- Cleaning: cap the marker after each use. If the tip dries out or becomes blocked, you can replace it with a new one thanks to the tip system.
Usage tips
Use layers to add depth
Metallic Playmarkers work very well in thin layers. Start with Gun Metal as a dark base in shadow areas and add Silver on edges and wear points. The result simulates worked metal far more convincingly than applying a single flat colour.
Mix on a palette or directly on the piece
You can deposit paint from different markers onto a wet palette and blend them with a conventional brush to obtain intermediate tones. Colours such as Gold, Bronze, Copper and Brass combined create a very versatile warm metals palette for fantasy figures or historical weapons.
Compatibility with the rest of the AK Interactive range
Playmarkers are compatible with AK Interactive water-based acrylic paints. You can use AK primer sprays to prepare the surface and seal with the same brand's varnishes once the figure is finished. The natural satin finish of the metallic colours can be modified without issue using any finishing varnish.
Frequently asked questions
What surfaces do these markers work on?
The Playmarkers in the AKM105 set adhere correctly to plastic, resin, metal and wood. It is recommended to apply a white primer beforehand to achieve maximum coverage and colour accuracy.
Can weathering be applied on top without damaging the paint?
Yes. Once dry, the Playmarkers paint resists handling and allows any AK Interactive weathering product to be applied without risk of lifting the base coat.
Is it possible to apply a varnish on top to change the finish?
No problem. Although the natural finish of the metallic colours in this set tends towards satin due to the nature of their pigments, you can cover them with any varnish (matt, satin or gloss) without damaging the paint.
Can the colours be mixed together?
Yes. The six colours in the set (Gun Metal, Silver, Gold, Bronze, Copper and Brass) can be combined with each other and with any other Playmarker in the AK Interactive range, both on a palette and directly on the piece while the paint is still wet.
Is it suitable for beginners?
The marker format makes Playmarkers very intuitive and easy to use, even without prior experience with modelling paints. The AKM105 set is a great entry point into painting metals as it includes the most versatile colours in the range.
