What it is used for
This set is designed to bring colour to the clothing and decorative elements of all types of figures, from wargame miniatures to historical dioramas and fantasy characters. The range covers medium and vivid tones that cover well over white primer and allow successive layers without lifting the previous paint.
- Painting tunics, cloaks, textile armour and fantasy clothing on wargame miniatures (28–32 mm scale and similar).
- Colouring historical figures: uniforms, decorative bands and accessories.
- Highlighting and gradients on larger-scale resin or plastic figures.
- Quick colour sketches on miniatures before applying more elaborate techniques.
- Ornamental details on dioramas: props, fabrics, flags and banners.
- Cosplay and SFX applications on foam, resin or PVC surfaces with a durable finish.
- Combination with other Playmarkers or AK Interactive acrylic paints to expand the palette of tones and effects.
How to use it
- Primer: Apply a coat of white primer before using the Playmarkers. AK Interactive recommends a white base to achieve maximum brightness and coverage with these colours.
- Activating the marker: Shake the marker well for a few seconds. Press the tip gently onto a test surface until the paint begins to flow evenly.
- Application: Paint directly onto the miniature with short, controlled strokes. The felt tip allows both broad areas and more precise lines depending on the pressure you apply.
- Layers and blending: Once the first coat is dry (fast drying), apply additional layers to intensify the colour or achieve transitions by blending colours wet-on-surface.
- Weathering effects: When the paint is completely dry, you can safely apply any AK Interactive weathering product: washes, pigments, filters, etc.
- Varnishing: If you want to modify the finish or protect the piece, apply any type of varnish (matte, satin or gloss) without any risk of damaging the paint.
- Cleaning: When finished, cap the marker tightly. If the tip becomes contaminated or worn, replace it with a new compatible felt tip.
Usage tips
Make the most of the set's palette
The six colours in the AKM103 are designed to work together. Use Emerald and Turquoise as a cool base for fantasy fabrics and then add touches of Purple in the shadows. Dark Orange and Peach are a natural pairing for warm skin tones, medieval garments and golden ornaments without metal. Medium Blue works perfectly as the main colour for uniforms or cloaks.
Flow and tip control
If the paint flows too much, reduce the pressure on the tip or leave the marker resting horizontally for a few seconds. If the tip starts to accumulate dry pigment, clean it with a damp cloth. Remember that the tip is, so don't hesitate to replace it when the line quality begins to lose precision.
Compatibility and blending
Playmarkers are fully compatible with each other and with AK Interactive's water-based acrylic paints. You can transfer paint from the marker onto a wet palette and mix it with other colours, or work wet-on-figure to achieve smooth gradients. Since they are water resistant once dry, subsequent washes and filters do not affect the base layers.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need primer before using these markers?
AK Interactive recommends applying a white primer before using the Playmarkers in the AKM103 set. A white base maximises the brightness of colours such as Emerald, Turquoise or Peach and ensures optimal adhesion on plastic, resin or metal.
Can the paint from these markers be varnished?
Yes, without any problem. Once the Playmarkers' paint is dry, you can apply any type of varnish — matte, satin or gloss — without any risk of lifting or damaging the colour layers. This allows you to standardise the final finish of the entire figure.
Can weathering be applied over acrylic marker paint?
Yes. The Playmarkers' paint is water and handling resistant once dry, making it fully compatible with subsequent weathering techniques: washes, pigments, filters and any other product from the AK Interactive range. You can work with complete confidence without fear of weathering products lifting the colour base.
Do these markers work on surfaces other than plastic?
Yes. The acrylic formula of the Playmarkers provides good adhesion on plastic, resin, metal and wood. With an appropriate primer, they also work correctly on porous materials such as foam, making them useful for cosplay or prop projects.
Can these colours be combined with other acrylic paints?
Yes. Playmarkers are fully compatible with the rest of AK Interactive's water-based acrylic range. You can transfer paint to a wet palette and mix it with other colours, or use them directly on the figure in combination with a conventional brush to expand the range of available tones and effects.
