What it is used for

This set is designed to cover the basic palette you need when painting undead troops, zombie hordes or skeleton armies. The six shades complement each other and can be combined with other Playmarkers or with the rest of the AK Interactive range to expand your possibilities. Their most common uses are:

  • Painting undead, skeleton and zombie wargame miniatures (Warhammer, Kings of War, Frostgrave, etc.)
  • Quick base coats on plastic or resin figures before applying washes and highlights
  • Colour sketches on miniatures to plan the colour scheme
  • Precise touch-ups of small areas on already painted figures
  • Applications in cosplay and props: necrotic skin tones, aged bone and decomposed flesh
  • SFX makeup effects on prepared surfaces such as latex or EVA foam

How to use it

  1. Priming: Apply a white primer to the miniature or figure before you start. AK Interactive recommends using white primer to achieve the greatest colour luminosity from the set.
  2. Activating the marker: Shake the Playmarker well before use. Press the tip on a test surface until the paint flows evenly.
  3. Application: Paint directly onto the surface with short, controlled strokes. BLACK (AKM002) and LIGHT GREY (AKM005) are ideal for bone base coats; apply ZOMBIE SKIN (AKM011) and PINK (AKM024) to flesh areas.
  4. Layering and blending: Work in thin layers. The paint can be blended wet-on-wet to achieve smooth transitions. Use DIRTY WHITE (AKM004) and WHITE (AKM003) to highlight areas where light strikes.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry time is fast. Wait for each layer to dry completely before applying the next to avoid lifting the previous one.
  6. Weathering and varnish: Once dry, you can apply washes, pigments or any weathering product without risk of dissolving the paint. If you want to change the finish, cover with any matte, satin or gloss varnish.
  7. Cleaning: Clean the tip with water if the paint dries on it. The tips are if they become worn.

Usage tips

Make the most of the set's colour combination

The set is designed so that all six colours work together in a cohesive way. Use BLACK (AKM002) for the deepest shadows in eye sockets and bone cracks; gradually transition to LIGHT GREY (AKM005) and DIRTY WHITE (AKM004) for the mid-tones and finish with WHITE (AKM003) on the most exposed edges. For zombie flesh, start with ZOMBIE SKIN (AKM011) and add PINK (AKM024) in the most vascularised or wounded areas.

Full compatibility with the rest of the AK Interactive range

Playmarkers are fully compatible with AK Interactive acrylic paints. You can use the markers for the base coat and complete the work with Standard paints or AK washes applied with a conventional brush. You can also refill empty markers with paints from the range if you already have the shades you need.

Tip maintenance

If the tip accumulates dry paint, moisten it with water and press gently on paper until the flow is restored. If the tip becomes deformed with use, replace it with a new one: Playmarker tips are and available separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to use primer before painting with acrylic markers?

It is not strictly required, but it is highly recommended. AK Interactive states that using white primer before applying the Playmarkers from the AKM102 set guarantees the best adhesion and colour luminosity, especially on plastic or resin surfaces without texture.

Can varnish or weathering products be applied over the marker paint?

Yes. Once dry, the Playmarker paint resists water, heat and handling, so it readily accepts washes, pigments, matte, satin or gloss varnishes and any other weathering product without risk of lifting the colour layer.

Can I blend colours directly on the miniature?

Yes. While the paint is still wet, Playmarkers allow you to blend and merge shades directly on the surface to create smooth transitions. In the AKM102 set this is especially useful for graduating the zombie flesh between ZOMBIE SKIN (AKM011) and PINK (AKM024), or for softening the transition between LIGHT GREY (AKM005) and WHITE (AKM003) on the bones.

What materials do these markers work on?

AK Interactive Playmarkers are formulated to adhere correctly to plastic, resin, metal and wood. These are the most common materials used in wargame miniatures, collector figures, cosplay props and diorama elements.

Can the markers in the set be combined with other colours from the same range?

Yes. The six colours in the AKM102 are fully compatible with all other Playmarker references and with the entire AK Interactive acrylic paint range. You can expand your palette with additional shades to achieve skin variations, oxidation effects, dry earth or other effects that complement your skeleton and zombie figures.
