What it is used for
This set is aimed at painting character figures in board games and wargames, although its versatility makes it a useful tool in many other creative contexts. The six colours cover the fundamental tones of skin, materials and equipment details that appear in most hero and adventurer miniatures.
- Wargame miniature painting: skin tones, fabrics, leather and basic metals in a single session
- Quick colour sketching on plastic or resin miniatures before refining with a brush
- Filling large areas on scale figures without needing a palette or water
- Cosplay and props projects: precise application on primed foam, resin or plastic surfaces
- SFX and artistic make-up: first colour layers on resin prosthetic pieces
- Dioramas and historical or fantasy figures requiring skin tones and metallic accessories
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a coat of white primer to the miniature or piece. AK Interactive recommends using white primer so that the Playmarker colours, especially lighter ones such as Yellow or Light Orange, show their full coverage and brightness.
- Shaking the marker: shake the marker well before use. To activate the paint flow, gently press the tip against a test surface until the paint flows evenly.
- Application: apply the colour directly to the miniature with controlled strokes. The felt tip allows you to work on both large areas and medium-sized details. You can layer coats once the previous one is dry to build up coverage and depth.
- Blending and transitions: while the paint is still wet, you can blend the edges with a slightly damp clean brush to create transitions and basic shading effects.
- Drying: drying is fast. Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, each coat is ready within a few minutes. Avoid handling the piece until it is completely dry.
- Weathering and finishing: once dry, the paint accepts washes, pigments and any effects products without risk of lifting the base coat. You can apply matt, satin or gloss varnish depending on the final finish you are looking for.
- Cleaning: clean the tip with a damp paper or cloth when finished. If the tip becomes clogged or deteriorates, replace it with a new one, as it is.
Usage tips
Paint flow management
The amount of paint that reaches the tip depends on the pressure you apply. Always start on paper or card to calibrate the flow before moving on to the miniature. If you notice that too much paint is coming out, reduce the pressure and work with shorter strokes. A well-controlled flow allows you to apply thinner coats and achieve better results in the final finish.
Combining the colours in the set
The six colours in the set are designed to work together. For example, use Dark Skin as a base skin tone with Light Orange for mid-range highlights, and save Desert Ochre for leather equipment or earthy fabrics. Silver is perfect for metals and armour details, while Red and Yellow add the colour accents that define the heroic look of many fantasy miniatures. In addition, these Playmarkers are compatible with the rest of the range, so you can easily expand your palette.
Varnishing and final protection
Although Playmarker paint is resistant to handling, protecting the miniature with a final varnish is always advisable, especially for pieces used frequently in games. You can use any type of varnish without worrying about it reacting with the paint. If you want to unify the natural satin finish of some colours, a matt spray varnish is the most convenient and quickest option.
Frequently asked questions
Are these paint markers compatible with other water-based acrylic paints?
Yes. AK Interactive Playmarkers use a water-based acrylic formula that is fully compatible with the rest of the acrylic paints in the range. You can combine the AKM101 with any other Playmarker or with AK Interactive Standard and Intense paints to expand your palette and achieve more transitions and effects.
Can this type of marker be used on any surface?
Playmarkers are formulated to adhere to plastic, resin, metal and wood, as long as the surface is properly prepared. AK Interactive recommends using white primer before applying colour to ensure the best adhesion and coverage, especially on plastic or resin miniatures.
Can weathering be applied over the paint from these markers?
Yes. Once dry, Playmarker paint is resistant and can easily accept washes, filters, pigments and any ageing effects products. The AKM101 is particularly useful as a base before applying shading or weathering techniques on wargame figures.
What type of varnish is compatible with these markers?
Any varnish, whether matt, satin or gloss, is compatible with AK Interactive Playmarkers. The natural finish of most references is satin, although it may vary depending on the pigment. If you need a specific finish, apply the appropriate varnish once the paint is completely dry.
