What it is used for
The AK1013 is the reference matte finish varnish for sealing and protecting painting work across a wide range of creative and modelling disciplines. Its neutral matte finish does not interfere with base colours or previously applied effects.
- Sealing paint on scale military vehicle, aircraft and ship models
- Protecting painted wargame miniatures before use in play
- Final protective coat on dioramas and diorama figures
- Surface preparation for applying filters, washes and weathering effects over a sealed base
- Finishing painted cosplay pieces to give them a professional matte look
- Setting makeup effects and SFX paints in artistic applications
- Use between painting phases to isolate layers and prevent washes from reactivating the previous coat
How to use it
- Preparation: Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute to ensure a homogeneous mix of the product.
- Application position: Keep the spray in a vertical position throughout the entire application.
- Application: Apply thin, quick coats at a distance of approximately 25 cm from the piece. It is preferable to apply several thin coats rather than a single thick one.
- Drying between coats: Allow approximately 5 minutes of drying time between each coat before applying the next.
- Nozzle cleaning: When finished, turn the can upside down and hold the nozzle pressed for a few seconds until no more product comes out. This prevents the nozzle from clogging and extends the spray's useful life.
- Storage: Store the can in a cool place away from heat sources or open flames.
Usage tips
Temperature and humidity
Apply the varnish under moderate temperature and humidity conditions. Extreme cold can cause the aerosol to lose pressure, and excessive heat can alter the finish. Ideally, work between 15 °C and 25 °C with relative humidity below 70%. Avoid applying it outdoors on very humid or rainy days, as the "frosting" effect (whitish surface) may occur.
Distance and thin coats
Maintaining the 25 cm distance is key to achieving a clean, uniform matte finish. Getting too close to the object can cause product build-up and unwanted shine. If you want a more solid protection, it is better to apply two or three thin coats with drying time between them than a single thick coat.
Use as an isolating layer between painting phases
One of the most valued uses among modellers is using the AK1013 as a separation layer between the base coat and the application of washes or filters. By sealing the acrylic paint with this matte varnish, you can apply enamel or lacquer washes without the risk of lifting the underlying layer, and also clean up excess product more easily.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to dry completely?
The Matt Varnish Spray AK1013 allows you to apply a new coat after 5 minutes from the previous one. For a complete, resistant cure before handling the piece with confidence, it is recommended to wait between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on the thickness of the applied coats and ambient conditions.
Can it be used over any type of paint?
Yes, the AK1013 is compatible with acrylic paints, enamels and lacquers once they are completely dry and cured. It is especially common to use it over acrylic paints from the AK Interactive range to seal the work before applying weathering effects.
Does the finish yellow over time?
No. The Matt Varnish Spray AK1013 formula incorporates anti-yellowing stability (non-yellowing), which guarantees that the finish maintains its chromatic neutrality over time. This is especially important for display figures and models.
What is the point of including two different nozzles?
The AK1013 includes a standard nozzle and a fine nozzle. The fine nozzle allows a more controlled output and is better suited for small pieces, miniatures or detail areas where greater precision is needed. The standard nozzle is ideal for larger pieces or for covering wide surfaces more quickly.
How do I prevent the nozzle from clogging?
At the end of each session, turn the can upside down and hold the nozzle pressed for a few seconds until no more product comes out. This simple step cleans the nozzle channel and prevents varnish residue from drying and blocking the outlet, extending the spray's useful life.
Is it suitable for wargame miniatures?
Yes, the AK1013 is a widely used option for protecting wargame miniatures. Its matte finish produces no shine that could distract at the gaming table, and its high resistance protects the paint from wear caused by continuous handling during play. It is one of the reference varnishes you will find at Feroca for this type of use.
