What it is used for
The AK1014 is the go-to semi-gloss spray varnish for those seeking a finish midway between matte and gloss: it protects the surface, unifies the finish and adds a touch of life to the work without being excessively shiny. It is particularly useful as a final protective coat or as preparation before applying subsequent effects.
- Final protection of scale models (military vehicles, aircraft, ships, cars)
- Sealing painted wargame miniatures before storing or playing with them
- Unifying the overall finish on dioramas and figures
- Surface preparation before applying filters, washes or weathering effects
- Satin finish on cosplay pieces and props for a semi-polished look
- Protection of SFX and character make-up work requiring resistance to touch and rubbing
How to use it
- Shake the can: before use, shake the spray vigorously for at least one minute to ensure a homogeneous mixture.
- Select the nozzle: attach the standard nozzle to cover large surfaces or the fine nozzle for areas requiring greater precision.
- Application position: hold the can upright at a distance of approximately 25 cm from the piece.
- Apply in thin coats: use quick, light passes. Avoid building up product in a single spot to prevent runs.
- Time between coats: allow at least 5 minutes to dry before applying a second coat if needed.
- Purge the nozzle: when finished, turn the can upside down and press the nozzle for a few seconds until paint stops coming out. This prevents the nozzle from clogging and extends the life of the spray.
Usage tips
Temperature and environmental conditions
Apply the varnish in an environment with a temperature between 15 °C and 25 °C and moderate humidity. Extreme temperatures or high humidity can affect drying and the final finish, causing an unwanted whitish effect ("blushing"). Never apply in enclosed spaces without ventilation.
Integration into the workflow
The satin finish of the AK1014 is ideal as an intermediate coat before applying washes or other effects from the AK Interactive range, as it allows products to flow correctly over the surface. You can also use it as a final coat if you are looking for a lively appearance, without the plastic look of gloss or the completely flat appearance of matte.
Nozzle maintenance
Purging upside down at the end of each session is essential. If the nozzle becomes slightly clogged, you can remove it and clean it with a compatible solvent. Store the spray with the nozzle attached and the can upright, away from heat sources and direct light.
Frequently asked questions
How many coats are needed for good protection?
In most cases, one or two thin coats of AK1014 are enough to properly protect the piece. Apply the second coat only when the first is completely dry and assess the result before adding more.
Can this varnish be used over any type of paint?
Yes, the Semi-Gloss Varnish Spray AK1014 is compatible with most paints used in scale modelling. It works especially well over acrylic paints from the AK Interactive range, available at Feroca as the official distributor in Spain.
What is the difference between a satin varnish and a matte or gloss one?
Satin varnish offers an intermediate finish: it has some sheen and brings colours to life without being as striking as gloss or as flat as matte. It is very popular on figures, military vehicles and pieces that aim for a "real" look without being excessively polished.
Is it suitable for pieces that will be handled frequently?
Yes. The ultra-resistant formula of the AK1014 makes it suitable for protecting wargame miniatures, cosplay pieces or props that will be handled frequently. For maximum protection, make sure to apply at least two thin coats and allow them to cure properly before use.
Does the varnish yellow over time?
No. The AK1014 is specifically formulated not to yellow, which guarantees that the original colours of your work remain stable over time.
Can it be applied over surfaces painted with a primer spray?
Yes, as long as the primer is completely dry and cured before applying the varnish. The AK1014 adheres correctly over primers and well-dried paint layers, sealing the entire work uniformly.
