What it's used for
This set is aimed at all hobbyists who work with organic and gore effects on their pieces. The chosen colour range covers everything from fresh blood to the darkest shades of damaged tissue, scabs and bruises. It is equally useful on a wargame miniature, a diorama figure or a cosplay prop.
- Fresh blood, dried blood and wound effects on wargame miniatures (undead, demons, chaos champions, necromancers, etc.)
- Viscera, entrails and exposed tissue on monsters, creatures and dark fantasy figures
- Scabs, pustules and disease marks on Nurgle miniatures or other pestilent factions
- Blood and gore effects on historical or fantasy dioramas
- Makeup and cosplay props for zombies, vampires, mutants and horror characters
- SFX special effects on prosthetics, masks and latex or resin pieces
- Painting organic details on scale resin or plastic figures
How to use it
- Priming: Apply a white primer to the surface before using the Playmarkers to achieve maximum colour accuracy and coverage. You can use the AK Interactive primer sprays available at Feroca.
- Activating the marker: Before first use, shake the marker well and press the tip against a test surface several times until the paint flows evenly.
- Application: Apply the colour directly onto the miniature or piece using the felt tip. The paint behaves like any modelling acrylic: you can work in layers, blend wet edges or create gradients by combining the three shades in the set.
- Layers and mixing: Once the first layer is dry, you can apply more paint to intensify the tone or mix wet on wet for smooth transitions between RED, PINK and PURPLE.
- Further weathering: The paint is handling-resistant and compatible with effects products and acrylic washes. You can apply additional effects without risk of lifting previous layers.
- Final varnish: If you want to alter the natural satin finish of these colours, you can apply any AK Interactive matte, satin or gloss varnish without affecting the paint.
- Cleaning: Clean the tip with a damp cloth after each session. Being water-based, clean-up is straightforward with water as long as the paint has not fully dried.
Tips and tricks
Build the effect in layers
To achieve a convincing blood or viscera effect, start with PURPLE in the deepest and darkest areas (inside wounds, shadows), add RED as the main tone and finish with PINK on the lighter edges or on surfaces where light hits directly. This working order gives depth and realism to the piece without needing to mix paints on a palette.
Make the most of the satin finish
The natural satin finish of these pigments works in your favour for blood and wet tissue effects, as it provides a visceral and organic appearance without the need for an additional varnish. If you prefer dried blood or crusty tissue, apply a matte varnish on top once the paint is dry.
Combine with other Playmarkers and acrylics
The three colours in this set are fully compatible with the rest of the AK Interactive Playmarkers range and with the Standard line acrylic paints. You can use a brown or black tone to darken areas of coagulated blood, or add white to simulate the sheen of dermis in fresh wounds. The tip lets you renew the marker when it wears out without having to buy a new one.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to use a primer before applying these markers?
AK Interactive recommends using a white primer before applying the Playmarkers from the AKM109 set to ensure maximum colour accuracy and coverage. On dark or unprepared surfaces, the tones may lose luminosity. At Feroca you'll find the AK Interactive spray primers designed for this type of work.
Can this type of marker be applied over resin and metal?
Yes. The acrylic formula of the AKM109 Playmarkers adheres correctly to plastic, resin, metal and wood, as long as the surface is clean and, preferably, primed. No additional special treatments are needed for these materials.
Can I apply washes or weathering effects on top without damaging the paint?
Yes. Once dry, the Playmarkers paint is handling-resistant and compatible with acrylic weathering products. You can apply washes, pigments and additional effects without risk of lifting the already applied layers of RED, PINK or PURPLE.
What type of varnish can be used to seal the finished work?
The Playmarkers from the AKM109 set are compatible with any type of varnish: matte, satin or gloss. If you want to preserve the wet, organic look of blood, a gloss varnish is the best option. For dried blood or crusty tissue effects, use a matte varnish. In no case will the varnish damage the paint.
Can these colours be mixed directly on the miniature?
Yes. You can mix the three tones in the set (RED, PINK and PURPLE) wet on wet directly on the piece while the paint has not yet dried, achieving smooth transitions and gradient effects without the need for a palette. You can also work in dry layers to build up colour in a controlled way.
