What it's used for

This set is designed for miniature painters, modellers and wargamers who need to cover weapons, tools and equipment quickly and precisely. The three colours in the pack are versatile base tones that work on their own or as a starting point for additional shading layers, washes and weathering effects.

  • Scale models: painting weaponry, mechanisms, straps and accessories on military vehicles, aircraft and dioramas.
  • Wargame miniatures: quick base coat for metals (Gun Metal), wooden handles and hafts (Wood), and leather pouches, holsters or belts (Leather).
  • Figures and busts: direct application over primer to define equipment and accessories.
  • Cosplay and SFX: painting props, EVA foam armour and accessories with detail without making a mess of your work area.
  • Quick sketches and colour tests: thanks to the marker format, you can test colour schemes before painting with a brush.

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: apply a coat of white primer before using the Playmarkers to maximise adhesion and colour saturation. AK Interactive expressly recommends using white primer with this range.
  2. Activate the paint: shake the marker for a few seconds and gently press the tip onto a test surface until the paint flows evenly.
  3. Apply the colour: paint directly onto the piece with the felt tip. Work in thin layers for greater control. The high coverage allows you to cover the surface in just a few strokes.
  4. Let it dry: drying is fast. Wait until the layer is completely dry before applying a second coat or moving on to weathering effects and washes.
  5. Add effects: once dry, the paint is handling-resistant and allows you to apply any weathering product, wash or varnish on top without risk of lifting the base coat.
  6. Cleaning: as it is water-based acrylic, clean the tip with a damp cloth. Store the markers horizontally or tip-down to maintain paint flow.

Usage tips

Combine the three colours in the set for tone variations

Mix Gun Metal with Wood or Leather directly on the surface while the paint is still wet to achieve transitions and tone variations without needing a palette. Gun Metal also works as a base for worn metal effects if lightly rubbed with a cloth before it fully dries.

Varnish to control the final finish

The natural finish of the Playmarkers tends towards satin depending on the pigment. If you want a matte finish for figures or dioramas, or a glossy finish to protect the piece before washes, apply the varnish of your choice without hesitation: the acrylic formula is fully compatible with both water-based and solvent-based varnishes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these markers without primer?

Technically, Playmarkers adhere to plastic, resin, metal and wood without primer, but AK Interactive recommends using a white primer to get the best coverage and colour saturation. Without primer, especially on dark or very smooth surfaces, additional coats may be needed.

Can the paint from these markers be mixed with conventional brush paints?

Yes. The water-based acrylic formula of the Playmarkers is compatible with water-based acrylic paints applied by brush or airbrush. You can use the Playmarkers for base coats and continue the process with conventional paint for details, shadows and highlights.

Does the paint from the markers withstand washes and weathering products?

Yes. Once dry, Playmarker paint is resistant to handling, water and heat, and allows washes, filters, pigments and any weathering product to be applied on top without risk of lifting the base coat. If you plan to use aggressive solvent-based products, it is advisable to apply an intermediate protective varnish layer.

Can I refill the markers when they run out?

AK Interactive Playmarkers are designed to be refillable. You can top them up with water-based acrylic paint thinned to the right consistency. This makes them a reusable and sustainable tool in the long run.

Are these markers suitable for freehand painting or only for large areas?

The brush-style felt tip allows you to cover wide areas quickly as well as work lines and edges with a degree of precision. For very fine details a conventional brush is still recommended, but for base coats, colour layers and general work on miniatures and models, the Playmarkers offer very acceptable control.

Where can I buy this set in Spain?

The AKM108 set is available from Feroca, the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. Feroca distributes the entire Playmarkers range and all other AK Interactive products for modelling, wargaming, cosplay and SFX.
