The Gloss Varnish 3GEN (AK11239) is the new-formula gloss varnish from AK Interactive, specifically designed to provide high-gloss satin finishes on scale figures and vehicles. Its 3GEN formulation offers uniform coverage and a resistant final film, ideal both for protecting finished work and for preparing surfaces before applying water-based filters or washes. Available in a 100 ml format, it is distributed in Spain by Feroca as the official AK Interactive distributor.

What it is used for

The Gloss Varnish 3GEN is a multipurpose varnish that serves both protective and technical functions within the painting process. It is especially useful in the following situations:

• Protecting the final paintwork on collector figures, wargame miniatures, and scale models of military or civilian vehicles.
• Sealing paint layers before applying decals, making them adhere without silvering effect.
• Preparing the surface for washes, filters, and wet effects that are better applied over a gloss finish.
• Providing a definitive gloss finish to vehicle bodies, aircraft, or fantasy figures that require a lacquered look.
• Protecting cosplay pieces and prop items with a durable gloss finish.
• Fixing paint effects on SFX pieces before handling or displaying them.

How to use it

1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. The paint must be completely mixed to ensure a uniform finish.
2. Brush application: Apply the varnish directly onto the surface with a flat soft-hair brush, using long, fluid strokes. Avoid going over the same area before it dries to prevent lifting the layer.
3. Airbrush application: Thin with AK11500 Acrylic Thinner until the appropriate viscosity is reached. Apply in thin coats at medium pressure (15–20 psi), maintaining a uniform distance from the piece.
4. Drying: Leave to dry in a clean, dust-free place. The touch-dry time is short, but it is recommended to wait at least 1–2 hours before handling the piece or applying additional layers.
5. Cleaning: Clean brushes and the airbrush with water or AK11500 Acrylic Thinner immediately after use.

Usage tips

Temperature and humidity

Apply the varnish under moderate temperature conditions (between 15 °C and 25 °C) and with not too high relative humidity. In very humid or cold environments, the varnish may take longer to dry and the finish may be affected. Avoid applying it outdoors in windy or dusty conditions.

Thin and uniform coats

Whether using a brush or an airbrush, it is better to apply several thin coats than a single thick one. An excessive coat can cause pooling on raised details, bubbles, or an uneven finish. With the airbrush, two light passes are more than enough to achieve an intense, uniform gloss.

Use as an intermediate sealer

If you are going to apply decals, use the Gloss Varnish 3GEN as a pre-seal over the area where you will place the decal. Once the decal has been applied and dried, you can apply another coat of varnish to fully integrate it with the surface and eliminate the silvering effect. Afterwards, if you need a matte or satin finish, apply the corresponding varnish as a final coat.
