What it is used for
The ULTRA MATT VARNISH is an essential final protective coat for sealing and protecting paintwork on all types of projects. It eliminates any unwanted gloss and unifies the surface finish impeccably.
- Sealing wargame figures (infantry, vehicles, monsters) after painting and washes
- Protection of scale models of military vehicles, aircraft and ships after applying filters and weathering effects
- Protective coat on dioramas and resin figures on which wet techniques have been applied
- Matte base prior to applying pigments and basing powders, as the matte surface retains them much better
- Final finish for cosplay pieces painted by hand or airbrush where a satin appearance needs to be eliminated
- Use in SFX projects to unify and protect make-up or painted elements that require a total absence of shine
How to use it
- Shake the bottle: shake the bottle well before opening to homogenise the formula and ensure a uniform finish.
- Surface preparation: make sure the piece is completely dry and free of dust or grease before applying the varnish.
- Brush application: apply thin, even coats with a flat soft-hair brush, avoiding overloading the surface to prevent build-up.
- Airbrush application: thin slightly with water if necessary (10–15%) and work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi with smooth, crossed passes at about 15–20 cm distance.
- Touch dry: wait at least 30–60 minutes before handling the piece carefully.
- Full cure: leave to dry for 12 hours before applying any other technique or considering the piece finished.
- Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush immediately with water. If the varnish has started to dry in the airbrush, use slightly soapy water.
Usage tips
Thin coats, better results
Always apply in thin coats. A single generous coat can create a milky effect or build up in detail areas, especially on small-scale miniatures. Two thin coats with good drying time between them deliver a more uniform result with no marks.
Perfect base for pigments and powders
If you are working with terrain pigments, rust powder or any type of dry powder, apply the ULTRA MATT VARNISH just before fixing them. The matte texture acts as a gripping surface, improving adhesion and the natural look of the final effect. Once the pigments are in place, you can fix them with a drop of fixer without needing a second coat of varnish.
Environmental conditions
Work in an environment with a temperature between 15 and 25 °C and relative humidity below 70%. High humidity can interfere with drying and create a whitish effect on the surface. Avoid applying it outdoors on cold or humid days.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be applied directly without thinning through an airbrush?
Yes, the ULTRA MATT VARNISH can be applied directly straight from the bottle through an airbrush. If you find the viscosity a little high for your equipment, a 10–15% dilution with distilled water is usually enough to achieve clean atomisation without clogging issues.
Does the matte varnish alter the colours underneath?
No. The ULTRA MATT VARNISH is transparent and does not modify the tones of the underlying paint. The only thing that changes is the level of sheen, eliminating any reflection and unifying the finish into a deep, consistent matte.
How many coats of varnish are needed to properly protect a miniature?
In most cases, one or two thin coats of ULTRA MATT VARNISH are sufficient to protect the paint on a miniature during regular use in wargame sessions. If the piece is going to be handled a lot, you can apply a third coat, allowing each one to dry thoroughly before the next.
Is it compatible with previously applied washes and filters?
Yes. The ULTRA MATT VARNISH is fully compatible with washes, filters and any modelling technique applied beforehand. Simply make sure all previous layers are completely dry before varnishing to avoid reactivating the wet products.
Can it be used outdoors or on large-format pieces such as cosplay?
Yes, the ULTRA MATT VARNISH can be applied to large-scale pieces such as cosplay elements or sculptures. For wide surfaces, an airbrush or spray diffuser is recommended to ensure even coverage. Bear in mind that it is not formulated as a permanent outdoor protective varnish against prolonged rain or UV exposure.
