The Satin Varnish 100 3GEN (AK11238) is AK Interactive's new-formula satin protective varnish, designed specifically for finishing scale figures and vehicles. It provides a durable protective coat with an intermediate gloss level, ideal when you want a realistic finish without the excessive shine of a gloss varnish or the full opacity of a matte one. What it is used for
This satin varnish is designed to protect and unify the final finish of your modelling projects, whether after painting figures or as an intermediate sealing coat before applying effects and weathering. Its satin finish is a perfect match for surfaces that need a semi-reflective, realistic appearance.
- Final protection for fantasy, sci-fi and military figures
- Sealing finishes on scale military vehicles
- Intermediate coat between painting stages and weathering techniques
- Unifying the finish on wargame miniatures after painting
- Protection of cosplay pieces painted with acrylics
- Fixing coats in special effects (SFX) projects and painted prosthetic make-up
- Dioramas with mixed surfaces requiring controlled sheen
How to use it
- Preparation: Make sure the piece is completely dry and dust-free. Shake the bottle vigorously for at least 30 seconds before use.
- Brush application: Apply the varnish directly with a flat, soft-hair brush in thin, even coats, avoiding build-up in areas of relief.
- Airbrush application: Thin the product with AK11500 Acrylic Thinner until you achieve the right viscosity. Apply at medium pressure using cross passes at a moderate distance from the piece.
- Drying: Allow to dry in a dust-free environment. Drying time varies depending on coat thickness and ambient conditions. It is recommended to allow the piece to cure fully before handling.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and the airbrush immediately after use with water or water-based acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Thin coats for a uniform result
Always apply in thin coats. A single thick coat can cause a whitish effect or build up in detail areas, ruining your previous work. It is better to apply two light passes than one dense coat.
Gloss control depending on the project
The satin finish of this varnish is ideal as a final coat on character figures with leather equipment, metal armour or military vehicles with light weathering. If you need a more matte or glossier finish for specific areas, you can combine it selectively with other varnishes from the AK Interactive range.
Ambient temperature and humidity
Avoid applying the varnish in conditions of high humidity or temperatures below 15 °C, as this can affect drying and the final finish. The ideal working temperature is between 18 °C and 25 °C with moderate relative humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be applied directly with a brush without thinning?
Yes. The Satin Varnish 100 3GEN (AK11238) is formulated for direct brush application with no prior thinning needed. For airbrush use, however, thinning with AK11500 Acrylic Thinner is recommended.
Is it compatible with water-based acrylic paints?
Yes, this varnish is fully compatible with AK Interactive's range of water-based acrylic paints. You can use it as an intermediate sealing coat or as a final finish over any surface painted with acrylics.
Does it protect well against frequent handling of pieces?
The Satin Varnish 100 3GEN provides a solid protective coat against the rubbing and regular handling typical of wargame miniatures or display figures. For heavily used pieces such as cosplay accessories, applying several thin coats is recommended.
Can I apply it over weathering techniques or washes?
Yes, it is common to use it as an intermediate coat before or after ageing techniques. Applying it before a wash makes it easier to remove excess product and protects the underlying paint layers.
Where can I buy it in Spain?
Feroca is the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. You can purchase the Satin Varnish 100 3GEN (AK11238) directly from the Feroca online store, with regular stock availability.
How much product do I need for a standard 28 mm miniature?
For a standard-size miniature, a very small amount is sufficient per session. The 17 ml bottle of AK11238 covers a large number of figures, making it a cost-effective option for both individual use and group wargame projects.
