What it is used for
This matte varnish is designed to protect and unify the final finish of any modelling or miniature project. It eliminates gloss differences between paint layers and fixes pigment work, washes and effects before or after their application.
- Matte protective finish on scale military vehicles, aircraft and naval models
- Unifying the finish on hand-painted historical and fantasy figures
- Intermediate varnish coat between work stages to protect previous layers before applying washes or pigments
- Sealing wargame miniatures (Warhammer and similar) after complete painting
- Protection of cosplay pieces painted with acrylics
- Fixing special effects in SFX projects and dioramas
- Use on dioramas to unify textures and surfaces of different natures
How to use it
- Preparation: Make sure the piece is completely dry and free of dust or grease. Shake the bottle well for at least one minute before use to homogenise the formula.
- Brush application: Apply the varnish directly with a flat, soft brush in thin, even coats. Avoid going over wet areas to prevent lifting the coat.
- Airbrush application: Thin with AK11500 Acrylic Thinner to achieve the right viscosity. Apply at medium pressure (15–20 PSI) in soft, overlapping passes.
- Drying: Leave to dry in a ventilated, dust-free place at room temperature. The varnish will be touch-dry in 20–30 minutes and fully cured after several hours.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and the airbrush with water or AK11500 Acrylic Thinner immediately after use, before the product dries.
Usage tips
Thin coats, better results
It is preferable to apply two thin coats rather than a single thick one. Excessive coats can create a milky effect or dull colours too much. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
Use it as an intermediate working coat
Applying Matt Varnish 3GEN between work stages is a very common practice among professional modellers. A coat of matte varnish before washes prevents them from staining unwanted areas and makes them easier to remove with greater control. Likewise, varnishing before applying pigments improves their adhesion to the surface.
Application conditions
Avoid applying the varnish in very humid environments or at low temperatures, as this can affect drying and the final finish. The ideal working temperature is between 18 and 25 °C. If you use an airbrush, make sure the air passage is clean to avoid bubbles on the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be applied directly with a brush without thinning?
Yes. Matt Varnish 3GEN (AK11237) is formulated to be applied with a brush without any need for thinning. For airbrush use, however, it is recommended to thin it with AK11500 Acrylic Thinner to adjust the viscosity.
Is it compatible with water-based acrylic paints?
Yes. Being water-based acrylic, Matt Varnish 3GEN is fully compatible with acrylic paints. It is an ideal option for sealing and protecting work done with the 3GEN range from AK Interactive.
Can I use it over pigment or powder effects?
Yes, although care is needed. Applying varnish over loose pigments fixes them permanently. If you want to preserve the powder texture without altering its appearance, apply the varnish with an airbrush from a certain distance in very light coats.
How long does it take to dry completely?
Matt Varnish 3GEN is touch-dry in approximately 20–30 minutes at room temperature. For a complete and safe cure before handling the piece, it is recommended to wait several hours.
Can it be used on surfaces made of different materials?
Yes. This matte varnish works well on plastic, resin, white metal and card, which are the usual substrates in models, miniatures and dioramas. It is a versatile tool for modellers, cosplayers and SFX artists alike.
