What it is used for
This black primer is the essential first step to achieve a uniform base with maximum adhesion before applying any coat of paint. It is especially useful when a dark background is needed to enhance subsequent layers of dark or metallic colours, or when working with the zenithal technique. It works on plastic, resin, metal, wood and other materials commonly used in scale modelling and parts manufacturing.
- Priming scale models of military vehicles, aircraft and ships
- Priming wargame miniatures before painting
- Black base for zenithal and preshading effects
- Priming resin figures for dioramas
- Preparing cosplay pieces made from foam, resin or plastic
- Base for metal effects with Xtreme Metal paints over a black background
- Preparing props and special effects elements in SFX
How to use it
- Prepare the surface: clean the piece thoroughly, removing any traces of grease, dust or mould release agent. For resin pieces, wash with warm water and soap and allow to dry completely.
- Shake the bottle: shake vigorously for at least 1–2 minutes before use to ensure a homogeneous mix of the product.
- Adjust thinning if necessary: for airbrush, the product is ready to use or can be slightly thinned with distilled water when working at low pressures. For brush, apply directly.
- Apply the primer: with an airbrush, apply thin, even coats maintaining a distance of 15–20 cm. With a brush, spread in thin coats avoiding build-up.
- Allow to dry: wait for complete drying before painting over it. If you need to sand the surface, do so after 24 hours.
- Cleaning: clean the airbrush or brush with water immediately after use, before the paint dries.
Usage tips
Thin coats for better results
Always apply in thin coats. A single coat that is too thick can obscure fine details on miniatures and figures, or cause cracking when drying. It is better to apply two light passes than one heavy coat. With an airbrush, a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi usually gives very good results with this type of primer.
Black as a strategic base
A black undercoat is not just a primer — it is a painting tool. If you work with zenithal lighting techniques, applying a grey or white primer from above over this black base already gives you a natural shading effect that greatly facilitates subsequent painting. It is also the ideal base before applying Xtreme Metal paints to achieve high-gloss metallic finishes.
Compatibility and storage
Being a water-based acrylic formula, it is compatible with the entire AK Interactive paint ecosystem. Store the bottle tightly closed, away from heat and direct light. If the product has thickened due to poor storage, shake well and add a few drops of distilled water before use.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the primer before using it with an airbrush?
The Black Primer 3GEN AK11242 is formulated to be used directly with an airbrush without thinning in most cases. If you work with very fine needles or low pressures, you can add a few drops of distilled water to adjust the flow. For brush application, use it straight from the bottle.
What materials can I apply this primer to?
The Black Primer 3GEN is formulated for all types of surfaces: polystyrene plastic (the most common in scale models), resin, metal, wood, foam and other materials used in modelling, cosplay and parts manufacturing. On very smooth or metallic surfaces, a light sanding beforehand improves adhesion.
How long do I need to wait before painting over it?
With thin coats applied under normal temperature and humidity conditions, the Black Primer 3GEN dries to the touch quickly. To paint over it safely, wait until the surface is completely dry to the touch. If you need to sand the primer, the manufacturer indicates it can be sanded after 24 hours.
Can I use this primer as a base for metallic paints?
Yes, and it is highly recommended. A black background is the ideal base for AK Interactive's Xtreme Metal range of paints, as it enhances the shine and depth of metallic colours. It is also the mandatory preparatory step for Super Chrome AK9198, which requires a perfectly smooth black base to achieve a mirror effect.
Is it toxic or does it require special ventilation?
The Black Primer 3GEN is a non-toxic water-based acrylic product. However, when used with an airbrush, fine particles are suspended in the air, so it is always recommended to work in a well-ventilated space or with an extraction booth, regardless of the product's toxicity.
