What it is used for

Grey Primer 3GEN is a general-purpose primer designed to prepare any surface before painting. Its neutral grey tone is ideal as an intermediate base: it does not darken light colours excessively nor neutralise them the way a black base would, making it a versatile choice for virtually any type of project.

  • Priming scale plastic, resin and white metal models
  • Preparing wargame miniatures before applying colour layers
  • Base for dioramas with pieces made of different materials
  • Primer on 3D-printed parts (FDM or resin) to seal layers and improve adhesion
  • Preparing cosplay elements made from foam, resin or plastic
  • Base in SFX and special effects projects on non-porous materials
  • Adhesion layer prior to enamels, lacquers or other AK Interactive acrylic paints

How to use it

  1. Surface cleaning: make sure the piece is free of dust, grease and mould release residue. Wash it with water and neutral soap if necessary and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least one minute before opening, ensuring the inner agitator ball mixes the product evenly.
  3. Thinning: for airbrush, the primer is usually ready to use as is or with minimal thinning with distilled water. Do a test on paper or a scrap piece to adjust the flow for your airbrush. For brush application, apply directly without thinning.
  4. Application: apply a thin, even coat using crossed passes if using an airbrush, or with a short, stiff brush in light strokes. Avoid build-up in detailed areas.
  5. Drying: allow to dry at room temperature. The surface will be touch-dry in a short time; however, wait the recommended 24 hours before sanding.
  6. Sanding (optional): after 24 hours, you can lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper to remove imperfections before painting.
  7. Airbrush cleaning: clean the airbrush immediately after use with water and, if necessary, with an acrylic cleaner. For brushes, wash with water and soap.

Usage tips

Pressure and needle adjustment for airbrush

Grey Primer 3GEN has good flow, but as a primer with high pigment load it is advisable to work with a 0.4 mm needle or larger and a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi. If you use a 0.3 mm needle, thin it slightly with distilled water to avoid clogging. Clean the airbrush as soon as you finish the session to prevent the primer from drying inside the body.

Thin coats to preserve detail

On miniatures or pieces with a lot of relief, apply two thin coats instead of one thick one. This ensures complete coverage without the primer obscuring edges, textures or engraved details. Allow to dry between coats, even for a few minutes, to avoid the orange-peel effect.

Grey as a versatile base

The neutral grey tone of this primer is a balanced starting point for both light and dark colours. If you are painting military vehicles, aircraft or figures with dark colour schemes, grey allows you to better see the actual coverage of each colour layer applied on top, making it easier to control the final result.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly with an airbrush without thinning?

Yes. Grey Primer 3GEN is formulated to be used ready for the airbrush. However, depending on your equipment and working pressure, you may need a small amount of thinning with distilled water to achieve the ideal flow. Always do a test before applying to the final piece.

What materials does this primer work on?

Grey Primer 3GEN is formulated for all types of surfaces: polystyrene plastic, polyurethane resin, white metal (zamak, pewter), high-density foam and 3D-printed parts in both FDM and photosensitive resin. On very smooth or metallic materials, a prior sanding with fine-grit sandpaper further improves adhesion.

How long should you wait before painting over it?

Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Grey Primer 3GEN is touch-dry in less than an hour, so you can start painting over it within a short time. If you intend to sand the surface before painting, wait the indicated 24 hours so the primer has cured sufficiently.

Is it necessary to use a primer before painting a miniature or model?

Technically it is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. A coat of primer like Grey Primer 3GEN dramatically improves the adhesion of subsequent paints, prevents the colour from peeling off when handling the piece, and unifies the absorption of different materials in the same model or figure. The final result is much more durable and with better coverage.

Can you sand after applying the primer?

Yes. Once 24 hours have passed since the application of Grey Primer 3GEN, the surface can be sanded with fine-grit sandpaper (400–600) to remove imperfections, graininess or mould line marks that were not previously eliminated. After sanding, apply a second thin coat if necessary before moving on to painting.
