What it is used for

Copper is a highly versatile metallic tone, particularly suited for representing copper surfaces, aged bronze, ornamental elements and industrial mechanisms. Its most common applications include:

  • Painting pipes, valves and machinery details in industrial or steampunk dioramas
  • Decorative metallic elements on scale military vehicles: fuel caps, fasteners, engine plates
  • Wargame miniatures: weapons, armour, ornaments and metallic reliefs on fantasy or science fiction figures
  • Ornamental pieces on architecture models: domes, finials, cornices
  • Oxidised metal effects combined with washes or ageing filters
  • Cosplay and SFX: realistic metallic finishes on foam, resin or plastic pieces
  • Sculptures and collector figures where a precise, uniform copper tone is required

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer beforehand. For metallics, a black or dark grey base enhances the depth of the Copper tone and highlights its satin shine.
  2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. Ultra-fine metallic pigments tend to settle; proper shaking is key to achieving even coverage.
  3. Thinning: For brush application, the paint can be used straight from the bottle or with minimal thinning using distilled water. For airbrush, thin between 10% and 20% depending on working pressure.
  4. Application: Apply in thin, even layers. Two or three coats will give you full coverage and a uniform metallic finish. Avoid thick coats that may mask the metallic effect.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying washes, filters or varnishes.
  6. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap immediately after use. If the paint has dried inside the airbrush, use isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the residue.

Usage tips

Make the most of a dark base

Metallic tones like Copper deliver their best results when applied over a black or very dark brown primer or base coat. The dark base seeps through the thin layers and provides natural shading in recesses without the need for a subsequent wash, adding volume and realism to the metallic finish in fewer steps.

Combine it with ageing techniques

Copper is an ideal starting point for oxidation and patina effects. Once the metallic coat is dry, apply a wash with green or brown tones to simulate verdigris and rust. You can also use powder pigments to add corrosion deposits in worn areas. The satin finish of Copper aids adhesion of these products without the need for an intermediate varnish in many cases.

Airbrush use for large surfaces

If you need to cover large surfaces — diorama backgrounds, cosplay pieces or large model structures — the airbrush is the best option. Thin Copper with distilled water at an approximately 80/20 ratio and work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI. Short, overlapping passes ensure even coverage without pooling or loss of the metallic effect.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly without priming?

Technically it is possible on clean, degreased surfaces, but it is not recommended. Primer improves the adhesion of Copper and prevents the paint from lifting or flaking, especially on plastic or metal. For best results, always use a primer compatible with water-based acrylics.

Do I need a final varnish after applying this paint?

It depends on the final use. For models or miniatures that will be handled frequently, a finishing varnish protects the Copper coat and unifies the visual result. If you want to maintain the metallic satin appearance, use a satin varnish. For subsequent ageing or patina effects, it is better to apply the wash before varnishing.

Is it compatible with acrylic washes and filters?

Yes. Copper is compatible with the washes and filters from the AK Interactive range. Once properly dry, the Copper coat accepts the application of dark washes to bring out shadows and details. If you want extra security before applying the wash, seal the coat with a satin varnish.

How many coats do I need for full coverage?

With Copper, two thin coats are usually sufficient for even coverage over a dark base. Over very light bases a third coat may be needed. The key is to apply thin layers and allow them to dry between coats so as not to lose or overload the metallic effect.

Is it suitable for airbrush?

Yes. Copper is formulated for application with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush, thin slightly with distilled water — between 10% and 20% — and work at moderate pressure. Clean the airbrush with water immediately after use to prevent the paint from drying on the needle or nozzle.
