What it is used for

Aluminium is a reference colour for reproducing aluminium metal surfaces across all kinds of modelling and artistic creation projects. Its ultra-fine pigmentation guarantees uniform coverage and a convincing metallic finish without the need for additional coatings.

  • Aluminium bodywork and panels on scale model aircraft, vehicles and spacecraft
  • Metal equipment and armour on wargame miniatures
  • Metallic details in dioramas: barrels, machinery, structures
  • Weathered metal effects combined with chipping techniques and washes
  • Cosplay pieces and props requiring a light, realistic metallic finish
  • SFX applications and artistic sculpture requiring cool metallic tones

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer, preferably black or dark grey, to enhance the depth of the metallic tone. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use to homogenise the metallic pigments.
  3. Brush application: apply thin, even coats. For areas of greater shine, load the brush less and work with dry strokes over raised details.
  4. Airbrush application: thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until the desired consistency is achieved. Recommended pressure between 15 and 20 psi.
  5. Drying: touch-dry time is quick, around 15–20 minutes. Allow to cure for at least 24 hours before applying washes or varnishes.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water or acrylic thinner while the paint is still fresh. Once dry, a solvent is required.

Usage tips

Enhance the metallic effect with a dark base

Aluminium gains much more depth and realism when applied over a black or very dark grey base. The ultra-fine pigments reflect light more intensely on dark backgrounds, achieving a more convincing metallic appearance with fewer coats.

Combine it with weathering techniques

This colour responds very well to sponge work and chipping techniques to simulate exposed aluminium beneath layers of chipped paint. You can also tone it down with dark washes to add dirt and depth in the recessed areas of the piece.

Control the finish with varnish

If you need a shinier finish to simulate polished aluminium, apply a coat of satin or gloss varnish from AK Interactive once the paint is dry. For matt or anodised aluminium, use a matt varnish to reduce reflection without losing the metallic tone.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly onto plastic without a primer?

Although Aluminium AK11207 has good adhesion, it is always recommended to use a primer beforehand to ensure adhesion and prevent chipping. In addition, a dark base coat noticeably improves the result of the metallic tone.

How much should this paint be thinned for airbrush use?

For airbrush use, start with an approximate 1:1 ratio with distilled water or acrylic thinner and adjust according to the viscosity you need. With metallic pigments, it is advisable not to over-thin in order to maintain coverage and the metallic effect.

Is it compatible with washes and effects products?

Yes. Aluminium AK11207 is compatible with the full range of washes and effects products from AK Interactive. Make sure the paint is fully cured or sealed with varnish before applying washes to prevent them from reactivating the colour layer.

What is the difference between this paint and the Xtreme Metal range?

Aluminium AK11207 belongs to the Standard range, with a water-based acrylic formula, a satin metallic finish and ultra-fine pigmentation. The Xtreme Metal range is formulated with a solvent base and is aimed at extreme high-gloss effects. Each range has its ideal application depending on the level of realism and shine you are looking for.

How long does it take to dry completely?

To the touch, Aluminium AK11207 dries in around 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To work on top with additional layers, washes or varnishes, wait at least 24 hours to ensure a complete cure.
