What it's used for
Amethyst Blue is a versatile color that fits multiple disciplines in scale modelling and plastic arts. Its blue-violet hue makes it especially useful for:
- Painting wargame miniatures: robes, cloaks, magical armour or fantasy elements.
- Military vehicles and scale aircraft where a dark accent or cool shadow is needed.
- Dioramas: backgrounds, architectural elements or cold ambient lighting effects.
- Collector figures and busts: shading on fabric areas, deep shadows or glazes over lighter colours.
- Cosplay and SFX: painting accessories, masks, foam or resin armour.
- Diorama bases and wargame terrain with a fantasy or nocturnal setting.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a primer (preferably dark grey or black) to promote adhesion and enhance the depth of Amethyst Blue. Surfaces must be clean, free of dust and grease.
- Paint preparation: shake the bottle well for 30–60 seconds before opening. The paint is ready to use with a brush; for airbrush, thin 10–30% with water or acrylic medium until the right consistency is achieved.
- Application: apply in thin, even coats. With a brush, work in light strokes allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. With an airbrush, set the pressure between 15 and 20 PSI for a smooth, even coverage.
- Drying: touch-dry in 10–15 minutes under normal conditions (20 °C, moderate humidity). For additional coats, wait at least 20–30 minutes before painting again.
- Finish: apply a final varnish (matte, satin or gloss) according to the desired result to unify the finish and protect the work.
- Cleanup: clean brushes and airbrush with water while the paint is still fresh. If it has dried, use a specific acrylic thinner.
Tips and tricks
Glazes and colour transitions
Amethyst Blue works exceptionally well as a glaze over lighter colours. Thin the paint at a 1:4 or even 1:6 ratio with acrylic medium or water and apply transparent layers to create cool shadows or gently shift the base tone towards violet. This is a common technique on fantasy miniatures to add depth to fabrics or stone.
Mixing and colour palette
Being a highly pigmented paint, Amethyst Blue tints mixes very effectively. Use it in small amounts to cool and darken other blues or to add a purple hue to blacks and dark greys. Mix directly on a wet palette to extend working time and achieve smoother transitions.
Storing the bottle
Clean the inside of the bottle's cap thread before closing to prevent paint from sealing the lid. Store upright, away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and shake well before use.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before using it with a brush?
Not necessarily. Amethyst Blue (AK11183) is formulated to be used straight from the bottle with a brush in thin coats. If it feels too thick in hot or low-humidity conditions, add one or two drops of water to restore the right consistency.
Does it work well with an airbrush?
Yes. By thinning Amethyst Blue between 10 and 30% with water or acrylic medium, it can be used without issues in an airbrush at pressures between 15 and 20 PSI. For zenithal passes or shading, you can thin it a little more.
Can it be used on any surface?
Amethyst Blue adheres well to primed surfaces (plastic, resin, metal). For porous surfaces such as foam or cardboard, always apply a coat of primer or sealer beforehand to prevent the material from absorbing too much paint.
Is it compatible with varnishes and other AK range products?
Yes, it is fully compatible with AK Interactive varnishes, mediums and finishing products. Once dry, you can apply washes, pigments, matte or satin varnishes over it without any reaction issues.
How long does the bottle last once opened?
Properly sealed and stored correctly (away from heat and direct light), a 17 ml bottle from the AK Interactive Standard range can last for years. The key is to clean the cap thread thoroughly before closing to prevent dried paint from making the bottle difficult to open.
