What it is used for
Sky Blue is a versatile colour that covers a wide range of uses in scale modelling, miniatures and visual effects. Its neutral sky blue tone makes it an essential addition to any basic palette.
- Background and sky painting in dioramas and scale aircraft models
- Aviation uniforms, aerial combat vehicles and Allied military equipment from World War II
- Wargame miniatures: base coats and blending on figures with blue clothing or equipment
- Water and ice effects in naturalistic dioramas
- Cosplay pieces requiring painted finishes in light blue tones
- Scene lighting (zenithal or OSL) mixed with other shades from the Standard range
How to use it
- Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, dry and primed. For plastic and resin, use a primer from the AK Interactive Sprays range.
- Shake the bottle well: close the bottle and shake for 30–60 seconds before each use to homogenise the pigment.
- Brush application: apply thin, even coats. For better coverage, apply two or three coats, allowing each to dry in between (15–20 minutes at room temperature).
- Airbrush application: thin with distilled water or AK Interactive's thinning medium until you reach the desired consistency. Recommended pressure: 1.0–1.5 bar.
- Drying: touch dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in 24 hours.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap or with AK Interactive's specific cleaner immediately after use.
Usage tips
Thin coats for best results
Always apply thin coats and allow them to dry thoroughly between layers. With Sky Blue, two coats are enough for an opaque coverage without losing the detail of the piece. Overloading the brush can cause pooling and drying marks.
Blending and gradients
Sky Blue works very well when mixed with whites and darker blues from the Standard range to create smooth gradients on skies or uniforms. To lighten the tone, add white in small proportions; to darken it, combine it with a deep blue or a neutral grey.
Final varnish
If you plan to apply washes or filters on top, first seal with a matte or satin varnish from AK Interactive. This protects the Sky Blue layer and makes it easier to correct mistakes in later stages of the painting process.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint for brush application?
The AK Interactive Standard range is formulated with a balanced viscosity for direct brush use. You can apply Sky Blue straight from the bottle for base coats. If you are looking for glazes or more transparent layers, add a few drops of distilled water or acrylic medium.
Can this paint be used with an airbrush?
Yes. Sky Blue (AK11175) is compatible with airbrush. Thin it by 20–30% with distilled water or AK Interactive's specific thinner to achieve the right flow and avoid clogging the needle.
How long does it take to dry?
It is touch dry in 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. That waiting time is sufficient before applying a second coat. Full curing takes place in 24 hours.
Is it necessary to prime the surface before painting?
Yes, on most porous or plastic surfaces a primer coat is recommended beforehand. This improves the adhesion of Sky Blue and ensures that the final colour is true to what you see on the bottle.
Where can I buy this paint in Spain?
Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase Sky Blue (AK11175) directly from the Feroca online shop with shipping throughout Spain and Europe.
Is it suitable for use on resin and metal?
Yes, Sky Blue adheres well to resin, metal and plastic as long as the surface is clean and treated with a suitable primer. For metal, an anti-corrosion primer or a specific primer is recommended before applying the paint.
