Snow Blue is an acrylic paint from the Standard range by AK Interactive, formulated with high pigmentation and a water-based formula to deliver uniform coverage in the minimum number of coats. Its cold, desaturated tone makes it an essential reference for depicting snowy surfaces, shadows on whites, winter skies and winter uniforms at any scale. Available in a 17 ml dropper bottle.

What it is used for

Snow Blue is a versatile colour within the cool palette. It covers everything from base tones for snow fields to mid-tones on figures with winter camouflage gear. It also fits into science fiction and fantasy projects where a glacial or ethereal aesthetic is sought.

  • Base and intermediate layers for snow and ice effects on dioramas and scale models
  • Cold highlights and shading on vehicles with winter camouflage (tanks, half-tracks, artillery)
  • Layering on wargame miniatures with arctic armour or equipment
  • Cold skin tones and shadow areas on fantasy or science fiction figures
  • Ice, frozen water and crystallised surface effects on dioramas
  • Application on cosplay pieces and SFX props requiring a realistic snowy blue

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, degreased and has a suitable primer coat. For cool tones like Snow Blue, a light grey or white primer enhances the luminosity of the colour.
  2. Shake the bottle: shake well for at least 30 seconds to homogenise the pigment. The mixing ball inside helps blend the contents.
  3. Thinning: for brush use, you can apply it straight from the bottle or thin slightly with distilled water (10–20%). For airbrush, thin it until it reaches a skimmed-milk consistency; AK's acrylic retarder helps control working time.
  4. Application: apply in thin, successive coats. The high covering power of the Standard range allows solid coverage in 2–3 coats, letting each one dry before applying the next.
  5. Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in approximately 24 hours before applying varnishes or washes.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with warm water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use acrylic thinner.

Tips and tricks

Snow and ice effects on dioramas

Snow Blue works wonderfully as a mid-tone on snowy surfaces: apply it over a white base and then lighten towards pure white on the areas most exposed to light. For deeper shadows, add a small amount of a darker blue or a fine wash. The result is snow with visual depth that looks highly realistic.

Drybrushing and transitions on miniatures

Thinned to a minimum with an almost dry brush, Snow Blue is ideal for drybrushing over rough textures: scaly skin, worn armour or snow bases with sand or baking soda. For smooth zenithal or cold NMM transitions, mix it on the palette with white or a mid-grey to obtain all the necessary highlight steps.

Airbrush and winter pre-shading

With an airbrush at moderate pressure (15–20 PSI), Snow Blue allows very subtle colour modulations on vehicle panels with white winter camouflage. Apply it to the corners and shadow areas before the final white coat to achieve a worn, tonally deep effect typical of the Eastern Front or Scandinavian fields.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this paint straight from the bottle with an airbrush without thinning?

The AK Interactive Standard range is formulated with a viscosity designed primarily for brush use. For airbrush, it is recommended to thin Snow Blue by 20–40% with distilled water or AK's acrylic thinner to achieve optimal flow and avoid needle clogging.

How many coats do I need for opaque coverage?

Thanks to the high pigmentation of the Standard range, Snow Blue covers solidly in 2–3 thin coats over primer. Applying thick coats can cause build-up and loss of surface detail; it is always better to add thin layers and let each one dry before the next.

Is it compatible with washes and varnishes?

Yes. Once the paint is fully cured (minimum 24 hours), Snow Blue accepts acrylic washes, oil washes and varnishes — matte, satin or gloss — from the AK Interactive range without any issues. It is always recommended to apply an intermediate varnish coat before washes to protect the base colour.

Can it be mixed with other colours in the range to create new tones?

Absolutely. AK Interactive acrylic paints are fully miscible with each other within the Standard range and with other AK water-based ranges. Mixing Snow Blue with white produces cool highlight steps; mixed with darker greys or blues it generates excellent cold shadows for winter camouflage schemes.

Where can I buy this paint?

Feroca is the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. You can purchase Snow Blue (AK11174) directly from the Feroca online store, where you will find the entire Standard range and the rest of the AK Interactive catalogue with shipping across mainland Spain and the Canary Islands.

What is the shelf life and how should I store the bottle?

AK Interactive acrylic paints have a long shelf life when stored correctly: close the bottle tightly after each use, store it in a cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and shake well before use.
