What it is used for

The Medium Olive Green shade is one of the most widely used base colours in military and figure modelling. It covers an extremely wide range of uses thanks to its versatility and the easy mixing that characterises the Standard range:

• Uniforms for military figures of any era and scale, from World War II to modern conflicts.

How to use it

1. Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer to the piece (clean, degreased and dry surface). For plastic or resin surfaces, a spray primer guarantees the best adhesion.
2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The high-pigmentation formula of the Standard range requires thorough homogenisation of the pigment.
3. Thinning: For brush application, it can be used straight or with a few drops of water or acrylic thinner. For airbrush, thin it to a skimmed-milk consistency (approx. 20–30% thinner depending on pressure and airbrush type).
4. Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next to avoid marks and achieve a uniform coverage.
5. Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 1 hour before applying shading layers, filters or varnish.
6. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with warm water immediately after use. If the paint has dried in the airbrush, use a specific acrylic thinner.

Tips and advice

Mixes and tone variations

Medium Olive Green works perfectly as a base colour on which to build highlights and shadows. Lighten it with a small amount of a light beige for edge highlights on raised areas, or add a touch of dark brown for shadows in recesses and lower panels. Being water-based acrylic, mixing it with other colours from the Standard range is straightforward and predictable.

Airbrush application on scale models

For military vehicles, apply Medium Olive Green as a base coat after priming and, before applying shadow and highlight modulation, consider a pre-shading coat with heavily thinned black along the panel lines. This enhances the depth of the colour and produces a more realistic result. Work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI for a fine finish without grainy texture.

Integration into the weathering process

The Medium Olive Green shade accepts subsequent effect products very well: filters, washes, pigment powders and chipping effects. If you apply a satin varnish between the colour coat and the washes, you will prevent them from staining the base paint irreversibly and will have greater control over the final result.
