What it is used for
Intermediate Green is a mid-range green tone widely used on military vehicles, aircraft and equipment from various eras and theatres of operation. It is one of the reference colours in scale modelling and is equally useful for fantasy miniatures, cosplay projects and special effects. Some of its most common applications include:
- Painting armoured vehicles and military trucks in scale (1:35, 1:72, 1:48 and others)
- Military aircraft with green camouflage schemes
- Wargame miniatures: infantry, beasts and creatures with greenish skin
- Base coat or intermediate layer in multi-layer camouflage schemes
- Dioramas with natural elements, vegetation or jungle environments
- Cosplay and SFX: body paint or accessory painting on prepared surfaces
- Historical and fantasy figures with green uniforms or armour
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer (acrylic or spray) beforehand to improve adhesion. Make sure the piece is clean, dry and free of grease.
- Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The dropper cap makes it easy to dispense paint without wasting it.
- Thinning for brush: If using a brush, you can apply it directly or thin it slightly with distilled water (5–15%) to improve flow.
- Thinning for airbrush: For airbrush use, thin between 20 and 40% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. Work at a pressure of 15–20 PSI as a starting point.
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. It is preferable to apply two light coats rather than a single thick coat to avoid loss of detail.
- Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Allow to fully cure before applying shading layers, filters or varnish (minimum 1–2 hours).
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap or with acrylic cleaner while the paint is still fresh. Once dry, a specific acrylic solvent is required.
Usage tips
Improve coverage in thin coats
To get the most out of Intermediate Green without obscuring the detail of the miniature or model, always work with thin coats and allow each one to dry before applying the next. If you need greater opacity, a second well-thinned coat is sufficient in most cases.
Integration into camouflage schemes
Intermediate Green works very well as a base tone or as a second tone in camouflage schemes. You can darken it with brown or black tones for shadow areas, or lighten it with toasted yellows for highlights and wear effects. The AK Interactive Standard range offers a wide compatible palette for building these schemes without complicated mixing.
Product storage
Store the bottle tightly closed, in an upright position and away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint has thickened slightly due to evaporation, a few drops of distilled water and a good shake will restore it to its original consistency. Do not use tap water in order to preserve the quality of the formulation.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to prime before applying this paint?
Although Intermediate Green (AK11149) has good adhesion, using a primer is always recommended to ensure the paint grips well to plastic, resin or metal. In addition, the colour of the primer influences the final tone, especially when applying thin coats.
Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?
Yes. All paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are compatible with each other as they are formulated with the same water-based acrylic base. You can mix Intermediate Green with other colours from the range to adjust the tone to your needs.
What finish does this paint have once dry?
Intermediate Green dries with a finish between satin and matte, which makes it compatible with the direct application of washes and filters without the need for an intermediate varnish in most cases. For completely matte or gloss finishes, apply the corresponding AK Interactive varnish once the piece is finished.
Is it suitable for airbrush work?
Yes. The formulation of the AK Interactive Standard range is designed to be compatible with airbrush use. You simply need to thin it 20–40% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner before loading it. Work with 0.3 mm nozzles or larger for optimal results.
How much coverage does a 17 ml bottle provide?
It depends on the application method and the thinning used, but a 17 ml bottle of Intermediate Green is enough to paint numerous miniatures or several medium-scale models. Applying thin, well-thinned coats optimises the product's coverage.
