What it is used for
Ocher is one of the most frequently used shades in modelling and miniatures. Its earthy warmth makes it an essential resource for a wide variety of projects:
- Military vehicles from the North African and Pacific theatres, where ochre is the quintessential base colour.
- Dioramas featuring arid terrain, stony ground or dry vegetation.
- Historical figures and wargame miniatures: tunics, leathers, colonial uniforms and skin in warm tones.
- Fantasy or sci-fi miniature painting where earthy or sandy tones are needed.
- Base for rust, dust and weathering effects on armour or machinery.
- Cosplay and SFX projects for ageing fabrics, painting prop accessories or creating dirt effects.
How to use it
- Prepare the surface: apply a suitable primer (grey, black or white depending on the final effect you want) and let it dry completely. A primed base ensures optimal paint adhesion.
- Shake the bottle well: close the cap and shake for 30–60 seconds to blend the pigment with the binder evenly. The Standard range uses a screw-cap bottle, so make sure it is tightly closed.
- Thin if necessary: for brush application, the paint is usually ready to use or needs only a slight thinning (5–15% water or acrylic thinner). For airbrush, thin until you reach a skimmed-milk consistency (between 20 and 40% depending on your airbrush).
- Apply in thin coats: it is better to apply two or three thin coats than a single thick one. Allow 10–20 minutes drying time between coats at room temperature.
- Seal the finish: once done, apply a matte, satin or gloss varnish depending on the effect you want to achieve. This protects the paint and makes it easier to apply subsequent filters or washes.
- Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush needle with water while the paint is still wet. If the paint has dried, use a dedicated acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Mixing and colour modulation
Ocher is a very versatile intermediate colour for creating smooth transitions. Add white or Ivory to lighten highlights on uniforms and sandy surfaces, or mix with earth brown for deeper shadows on leathers and terrain. Being a water-based acrylic paint, it mixes perfectly with the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range.
Washes and patinas over Ocher
Ocher is an ideal base for applying dark brown or black washes. Apply the wash over a gloss-varnish-sealed coat so the product flows easily into recesses and you can clean the excess without damaging the base paint. Once dry, seal again with matte varnish to unify the finish.
Dust and weathering effects
This shade works very well as a base or as a dry dust colour mixed with earthy pigments. If you are working on vehicles or figures with heavy weathering, use Ocher thinned to the maximum to glaze worn areas and simulate the build-up of dirt on dark surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before using it with an airbrush?
Yes, in general AK Interactive Standard acrylic paints benefit from a 20–40% thinning with water or acrylic airbrush thinner. The ideal consistency is similar to skimmed milk. With Ocher (AK11118) we recommend doing a test on paper before moving on to the actual piece, as the exact dilution depends on the pressure and type of airbrush you use.
Can I apply this paint directly onto plastic without priming?
It is not recommended. Although water-based acrylic paints have some adhesion on plastic, a proper primer noticeably improves durability and coverage. With Ocher (AK11118), a grey or sand base allows the final colour to be more accurate and subsequent coats to behave better.
How long does it take to dry between coats?
At room temperature (20–25 °C) and with thin coats, AK Interactive's Ocher paint is touch-dry in about 10–20 minutes. To safely apply a second coat without lifting the previous one, wait at least 15–20 minutes. Full and definitive drying occurs after 24 hours.
Is this paint compatible with washes and filters?
Yes, but it is essential to seal the Ocher (AK11118) coat with a gloss varnish before applying washes or filters. This protects the base paint and allows you to clean excess wash without risk of damage. Once the effect is integrated, apply the final varnish that matches the desired finish.
How do I keep the bottle in good condition?
Close the bottle tightly after each use to prevent the paint from drying out. If you notice a crust has formed around the bottle mouth, remove it with a toothpick before closing. Store bottles upright in a cool place away from direct sunlight. With this care, the AK Interactive Standard range retains its properties for a long time.
