What it is used for

Tan Yellow is a fundamental base colour for scale models of desert military vehicles, historical figures and wargame miniatures. Its warm, earthy tone makes it an essential resource for a wide variety of projects:

  • Base coat or mid-layer colour for military vehicles with a desert or arid setting (wheels, chassis, worn surfaces)
  • Painting uniforms and equipment on historical and fantasy figures
  • Wargame miniatures: base coats, zenithal highlighting and colour transitions on infantry and cavalry
  • Dioramas: dry earth, compacted sand, summer vegetation and natural elements
  • Cosplay and SFX: applied directly or mixed for skin tones, aged leather textures and dust effects
  • Mixing with other colours from the Standard range to create custom transitions or tints

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer to the piece (acrylic or spray). Tan Yellow covers well over grey or white primers; over black it may require an additional coat.
  2. Thinning: for brush application, mix with a few drops of distilled water or acrylic retarder until you reach the desired consistency. For airbrush, thin between 20% and 40% with water or a specific acrylic thinner.
  3. Application: apply in thin, even coats. The high pigmentation of the Standard range provides efficient coverage in just a few passes. Allow to dry between coats.
  4. Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Full curing before varnishing or working over the surface may require 1 to 2 hours.
  5. Clean-up: clean brushes and airbrush immediately after use with water and soap or an acrylic cleaner. If the paint has dried in the airbrush, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Tips and tricks

Take advantage of the pigmentation for quick base coats

The AK Interactive Standard range is formulated with a high pigment load. With Tan Yellow you can cover medium to large surfaces in just a few coats, making it an excellent option for base work before applying shading, highlights or filters.

Colour mixing and modulation

Tan Yellow works very well when mixed with other colours from the same range to create shadows by adding darker tones or highlights by adding white and light yellows. You can also use it as a starting point to modulate the colour of desert vehicles by applying very thinned glaze coats over a dark base.

Compatibility with finishing techniques

Being a water-based acrylic, Tan Yellow is fully compatible with acrylic varnishes, enamel washes applied over varnish and powder pigments. To protect the finished work, always apply a coat of matte or satin varnish before using enamel washes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the paint need to be thinned before using it with an airbrush?

Yes. Although Tan Yellow has a consistency suitable for brush use with little or no thinning, for airbrush use it is recommended to thin it between 20% and 40% with distilled water or an acrylic thinner. This ensures a smooth flow and prevents needle clogging.

Can it be used directly on plastic without a primer?

It is possible, but not recommended. Applying a primer improves the adhesion of Tan Yellow on plastic, resin or metal, and ensures a more even and durable final colour. AK Interactive offers both spray and bottle primers that are compatible with this paint.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Tan Yellow is touch-dry in about 15–30 minutes. Before applying a second coat or varnishing, it is recommended to wait at least 1 hour to ensure full drying and prevent the underlying layer from reactivating.

Is it suitable for resin miniatures?

Yes. Tan Yellow can be used on resin miniatures as long as the surface is properly prepared: clean, degreased and with a coat of primer. The water-based acrylic formula does not attack resin and offers good adhesion with the appropriate preparation.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Tan Yellow (AK11116) is available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase it directly from the Feroca online store with shipping throughout mainland Spain and the islands.

Which weathering techniques is it compatible with?

Tan Yellow is compatible with most common weathering techniques used in scale modelling: enamel washes (always applied over varnish), chipping with a sponge or damp brush, acrylic filters and powder pigments. Its satin-matte finish aids the adhesion of subsequent finishing products.
