What it is used for

Brown Sand is a versatile tone that fits a wide range of projects where you need to recreate arid, weathered or earthy surfaces with a convincing result. Its warm palette makes it especially useful in military and nature contexts, though it also works great for fantasy miniatures and creative projects.

  • Base colour or primary tone on desert theatre and North Africa military vehicles
  • Painting bases and arid terrain in dioramas and wargames (sand, dry earth, eroded rock)
  • Highlight and shadow layers on wargame miniatures with earth-toned uniforms or skin
  • Mixing to obtain intermediate browns, muted ochres or darkened sand
  • Dust and weathering effects on scale figures and vehicles
  • Cosplay and SFX applications to simulate tanned skin, dry mud or deteriorated surfaces

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, dry and properly primed. For the airbrush, strain the paint well or thin it slightly with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner (between 10% and 20% depending on the pressure).
  2. Brush application: Apply in thin, even coats. The high pigmentation of the Standard range provides good coverage from the first coat; two coats guarantee a solid finish. Allow at least 15–20 minutes drying time between coats.
  3. Airbrush application: Thin to taste and work with cross passes at low pressure (15–18 PSI) for greater control. Brown Sand works very well for pre-shading and modulating with transparent layers on top.
  4. Drying: Approximate touch-dry time of 20–30 minutes under normal conditions. To varnish or apply filters on top, wait at least 1 hour.
  5. Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use AK Interactive specific acrylic thinner.

Usage tips

Mixing and colour modulation

Brown Sand mixes directly with other colours in the Standard range without losing flow. To lighten, add small amounts of a pale beige or off-white. To darken and create shadows, mix with dark earth or a cool brown. These variations will let you do zenithal, OSL or layered painting without switching ranges.

Weathering and dust effects

Thanks to its neutral, warm tone, Brown Sand is an ideal starting point for chipping techniques, washes and sand pigments. Applied as a base coat, it takes dark washes in recessed areas and light touches on highlighted edges very well. You can also use it directly with a dry brush for dust effects on vehicles or figure boots.

Use on bases and terrain

For wargame bases or desert dioramas, apply Brown Sand thinned 30–40% over a black or dark grey primer coat to achieve warm earth with depth. Combine it with fine sand textures, ochre pigments and dry scrub for a realistic result without much effort.

Frequently asked questions

Does this paint need to be thinned for airbrush use?

Yes, although the AK Interactive Standard range has good flow, for airbrushing it is advisable to thin Brown Sand between 10% and 20% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. The exact ratio depends on your airbrush and working pressure, so always test on a piece of cardboard before moving to the actual piece.

Can I apply this paint directly on plastic without priming?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. A primer improves adhesion and prevents the paint from chipping with handling. For the best result with Brown Sand, first apply an acrylic or spray primer — grey or sand — depending on the final result you are looking for.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

Brown Sand, like the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range, is touch-dry in about 20–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For successive coats or to apply washes and varnishes on top, wait at least one hour to make sure the previous coat is fully cured.

Is it compatible with acrylic washes and filters?

Yes. Brown Sand as a base coat accepts acrylic washes and filters from AK Interactive very well. For extra safety, especially if you are going to use solvent-based products, apply an intermediate satin varnish before the washes. This protects the colour and makes it easier to clean up any excess.

Can it be used on resin or metal miniatures?

Yes, Brown Sand works perfectly on resin, white metal and other common miniature substrates, as long as the surface is clean and properly primed. On metal pieces, prior degreasing with isopropyl alcohol and a grip primer are key steps before painting.

Where can I buy this paint with a guarantee of an original product?

Feroca is the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain, so purchasing Brown Sand (AK11120) through Feroca guarantees that the product is 100% original, with proper storage conditions and full traceability.
