What it is used for

Light Rust is a reference colour for simulating surface corrosion, incipient rust and metal degradation. It is one of the most versatile tones in any military vehicle, figure or diorama modeller's arsenal, and is equally useful in cosplay and SFX projects.

  • Representation of light rust and corrosion on scale military vehicles (tanks, half-tracks, trucks).
  • Ageing effects on ship and aircraft models.
  • Chipping and weathering on metallic surfaces of wargame miniatures.
  • Industrial or post-apocalyptic dioramas where rust takes centre stage.
  • Base colour for filters and washes in earth or brown tones.
  • Weathering of armour, props and accessories in cosplay and SFX projects.

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and primed to maximise adhesion.
  2. Thinning: For brush application, you can use it straight from the bottle or thin it slightly with water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. For airbrush, thin it to a skimmed milk consistency; start with a 1:1 ratio and adjust according to your airbrush type.
  3. Application: Apply in thin coats and allow to dry between each one. Solid coverage is achieved in two or three coats. For realistic rust effects, work with semi-transparent layers over a darker base.
  4. Drying: Touch dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in approximately 24 hours. Avoid handling the piece before it is fully cured if you intend to apply wet techniques on top.
  5. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush immediately after use with water and a few drops of mild soap. Do not let the paint dry inside the airbrush.

Tips and tricks

Recreating rust with depth and realism

Light Rust works best in combination with darker and lighter tones. First apply a dark brown or reddish tone as a base, then Light Rust as the mid-layer, and finish with a light orange tone on the most exposed areas. The result is a highly convincing rust effect with volume and gradient.

Dry brush chipping technique

Load a flat brush with a small amount of Light Rust, remove the excess on paper and lightly drag it over edges and raised details. This technique allows you to add micro rust chips over layers of military green or grey paint with very precise control.

Airbrush use for modulation

Thinned to 50–60% with acrylic thinner, Light Rust is ideal for modulation glazes over surfaces representing exposed metal. Work at low pressure (between 10 and 15 psi) and at a distance of around 10 cm for a smooth gradient without colour bursts.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used directly without primer?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. With primer, Light Rust adheres much better and the colour is more true to tone. On untreated plastic, the paint may peel over time or when handling the piece.

Is it compatible with washes and filter techniques?

Yes. Once fully cured, Light Rust withstands water-based and oil washes without any issues, especially if you apply a coat of satin varnish beforehand. For white spirit-based filters, wait for the full 24-hour cure.

What finish does this paint have once dry?

Light Rust dries to a finish between satin and matt, which closely mimics the rough and porous texture of real rust. If you need a fully matt finish, apply a matt varnish on top once it is dry.

Can it be mixed with other colours from the same range?

Yes, all paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are intermixable. You can mix Light Rust with other earth tones, oranges or browns to customise the rust tone exactly to your liking.

Is it suitable for use with a double-action airbrush?

Yes, without any problem. Thin it to 50% with water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner and work at a pressure of between 10 and 20 psi. It is one of the most airbrush-friendly paints in the Standard range thanks to its flow once thinned.

Where can I buy this paint?
