What it is used for
Deep Brown is an essential shade in any modelling palette. Its chromatic range covers everything from aged wood to leather, earth tones and warm shadows, making it a go-to colour for a wide variety of projects.
- Scale military vehicle painting: interiors, seat leather, straps and harnesses
- Aircraft models: wooden panels, cockpits and period details
- Wargame miniatures: dark skin tones, cloaks, boots and leather equipment
- Dioramas: dirt floors, logs, roots and weathered wooden surfaces
- Cosplay and SFX: base for skin effects, organic textures and prop accessories
- Historical figures: uniforms, cartridge pouches and period equipment
How to use it
- Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, dry and primed. A dark primer enhances the depth of Deep Brown.
- Shaking: shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before opening. The mixing ball inside helps homogenise the pigment.
- Thinning: for brush work, use it straight from the bottle or thin with distilled water (5–15%). For airbrushing, thin to the right consistency, typically 20–30% water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner.
- Application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Two or three coats ensure solid, uniform coverage.
- Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Full cure is reached in around 24 hours.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with warm water immediately after use. If the paint has dried, use a dedicated acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Use Deep Brown as a shading base coat
This shade works very well as a base coat before applying darker washes or filters. Being a deep brown, it acts as a starting point for progressive highlights with warmer, lighter colours on raised areas, creating convincing volume without the need for many intermediate steps.
Mixing and transitions with other Standard range colours
Deep Brown is miscible with the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range. Mix small proportions with beige or sand tones to obtain intermediate browns that imitate wood or dry terrain. For cooler shadows, add a few drops of bluish or greenish colours to achieve depth in hard-to-reach areas.
Airbrushing for dirt and dust effects
Thinned to around 25–30% and at low pressure (12–15 psi), Deep Brown allows you to modulate dirt and dust on running gear, vehicle undersides and diorama bases. Work in very thin coats with circular movements to avoid hard lines and achieve a natural transition.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be thinned with tap water?
It is possible, but distilled water is recommended. Tap water contains minerals that can affect the adhesion and drying of acrylic paint. With Deep Brown, using distilled water ensures a stable mixture and a uniform application.
Is a primer necessary before applying this paint?
Yes, priming the piece is always recommended. Deep Brown, like the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range, adheres better over a primed surface, which also improves the durability of the finish and the intensity of the final colour.
Can it be used straight from the bottle with a fine brush?
Yes. For brush work, Deep Brown can be applied directly without additional thinning, especially for coverage coats. If you are looking for a more translucent finish or shading glazes, a slight thinning with distilled water (5–10%) gives better results.
Is it compatible with subsequent varnishes and washes?
Yes. Once fully dry and cured, the Deep Brown coat accepts acrylic varnishes and washes without any issue. It is recommended to apply a protective varnish coat before using solvent-based washes, to prevent the solvent from reactivating the acrylic paint.
How long does it take to dry between coats?
Under normal temperature and humidity conditions (20 °C, average humidity), Deep Brown is touch-dry in approximately 15–20 minutes. To safely apply a second coat, wait between 20 and 30 minutes. Full cure occurs at around 24 hours.
