What it is used for
Dark Flesh is a highly versatile dark flesh tone that works both as a base colour and as a shadow coat over lighter skin tones. It is especially useful in projects where you need to represent tanned or sun-burnt skin, fantastical creature skin, or realistic skin gradients.
- Skin base for historical infantry figures from ancient, medieval or colonial periods
- Shadow and undercoat on wargame miniatures with dark skin tones (orcs, humans, creatures)
- First coat in zenithal and NMM techniques on fantasy or sci-fi figures
- Representation of burnt or weathered skin in military dioramas
- Artistic make-up in cosplay and special effects (SFX) projects on latex and flexible materials
- Skin details on creatures in dioramas or terrain scenes with figures
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer to the figure or piece. A grey or black primer enhances the depth of the Dark Flesh tone.
- Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The anti-drip nozzle makes it easy to pour just the right amount onto the palette.
- Thinning: For brush work, use the paint undiluted or with a few drops of water for coverage coats. For airbrush, thin 20–30% with water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you reach the desired viscosity.
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next to avoid lifting the previous layer.
- Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Full cure is achieved after 24 hours.
- Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. Once dry, use acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Build up the skin tone in layers
Dark Flesh works wonderfully as a first coat over black or dark grey primer. From there you can gradually lighten with brighter tones from the AK Interactive range through progressive mixes, leaving Dark Flesh in the shadow areas to create a natural gradient without the need for additional washes.
Use it as a shadow and transition colour in wet techniques
If you work with wet blending or glazes, Dark Flesh is an excellent transition colour between deep shadow areas and the mid-tones of the skin. Thinned to 50% it behaves as a soft glaze that adds warmth and depth to any lighter flesh tone.
Full compatibility with the AK Interactive Standard range
You can mix Dark Flesh directly with any other colour from the AK Interactive Standard range without adhesion issues or drying time problems. The homogeneous consistency throughout the range makes palette mixing straightforward, letting you achieve exactly the tone you need.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before using it with an airbrush?
Yes, for airbrush use it is recommended to thin Dark Flesh by 20–30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. This ensures clean atomisation and prevents needle clogging.
How long does this paint take to dry?
Dark Flesh is touch-dry in around 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For a full cure that allows varnishing or applying additional coats without risk, it is best to wait 24 hours.
Can it be applied directly onto plastic without primer?
Technically it is possible, but it is not recommended. Primer significantly improves the adhesion of Dark Flesh on plastic, resin or metal, and extends the durability of the paint layer. AK Interactive offers primers in both spray and bottle form specifically for this purpose.
Is this paint suitable for working with resin figures?
Yes. Dark Flesh adheres perfectly to resin that has been properly prepared and primed. Make sure to clean the figure with soap and water before priming to remove any mould release agent residue.
Can I mix it with other paints from the same range?
Yes, Dark Flesh is fully compatible with all other colours in the AK Interactive Standard range. The mixes are stable and homogeneous, making it easy to create custom tones directly on the palette.
Where can I buy this paint in Spain?
