What it is used for
Sunny Skin Tone is a warm, luminous skin tone designed to represent flesh lit by direct sunlight or warm ambient light. It is a commonly used colour for all kinds of figures, from wargame miniatures to large-scale busts and resin figures.
- Base skin tones on wargame miniatures (warriors, heroes, fantasy characters)
- Highlight areas in drybrushing and zenithal techniques on military or civilian figures
- Mixing with other flesh tones to create natural transitions on historical or science fiction figures
- Cosplay and prop-making projects where warm skin tones need to be replicated using acrylic paint
- Skin effects for SFX models and scenery figures in dioramas
- Final highlights over darker layers of Flesh or mid-range flesh tones
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer before painting. For skin figures, a white or light beige primer enhances the luminosity of Sunny Skin Tone.
- Shaking the bottle: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The high pigmentation of the Standard range means pigment can settle at the bottom.
- Thinning: for brush use, you can apply the paint straight or thin it slightly with distilled water. For airbrushing, adjust the consistency until it resembles skimmed milk.
- Application: apply in thin, even coats. A first coat of medium coverage followed by a second coat guarantees a solid result without losing miniature detail.
- Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Wait for each coat to be completely dry before applying the next.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and the airbrush with water and soap immediately after use. Do not let the paint dry on your tools.
Tips and tricks
Realistic skin transitions
Sunny Skin Tone works particularly well as a highlight tone over a darker base. Apply it to the areas most exposed to light (forehead, nose, cheekbones, knuckles) and blend with the base tone in transition areas to achieve a natural finish. A drop of white mixed in serves for the most extreme highlights.
Airbrush and zenithal technique
With an airbrush, Sunny Skin Tone delivers very smooth results when working at low pressure (between 10 and 15 psi) and quick passes. It is ideal for zenithal passes over a Flesh base or a mid-range flesh tone, letting the gradient do the lighting work before switching to a brush for the details.
Storage
Store the bottle upright, tightly closed and away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint has thickened due to evaporation, add a few drops of distilled water, close the bottle and shake well before use.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used straight without thinning?
Yes, Sunny Skin Tone can be applied directly with a brush without any prior thinning. However, for very thin coats or airbrush work, it is recommended to thin it slightly with distilled water to improve flow and avoid brush marks.
Is it compatible with other water-based acrylic paints?
Yes, Sunny Skin Tone is compatible with the rest of the Standard range paints and with any other water-based acrylic paint. You can mix it with other AK Interactive flesh tones to create custom transitions.
What primer is most suitable before applying this colour?
To get the best performance from Sunny Skin Tone, a light primer (white or light beige) is recommended. This allows the warm tone of the colour to express itself fully without a dark base dulling it. AK Interactive offers spray primers and airbrush-format primers available at Feroca.
Can this paint be used for cosplay and prop-making?
Sunny Skin Tone is formulated as a paint for modelling and miniatures, not as make-up for direct use on skin. However, it is commonly used in cosplay on materials such as foam, latex, resin or thermoformed plastics to create skin effects on armour and accessories.
How much surface does a 17 ml bottle cover?
The surface area covered by a 17 ml bottle of Sunny Skin Tone depends on the application method and thinning used. On small-scale miniatures (28–32 mm), a single bottle can cover dozens of figures. On larger-scale projects or cosplay pieces, coverage will vary depending on the area to be painted.
