What it is used for
Luminous Flesh is a light, luminous skin tone designed to represent human complexions with vitality. Its hue is particularly useful as a base colour or highlight in figure painting, whether for scale modelling, wargaming or artistic sculpture.
- Historical and fantasy figure painting: skin of human characters, elves, demigods and other fair-skinned races.
- Wargame miniatures (Warhammer and similar): base or first highlight over skin tones using a layering technique.
- Military dioramas in scale: faces and hands of crew members, soldiers and civilian figures.
- Cosplay and SFX: touch-up or airbrush base over latex, EVA foam and resin in prosthetics and costume pieces.
- Artistic sculpture and busts: representation of vibrant skin tones with high contrast between light and shadow areas.
- Sci-fi models: synthetic skins, androids or fair-skinned aliens.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer (preferably grey or white to enhance the luminosity of Luminous Flesh) and allow it to dry completely before continuing.
- Paint preparation: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds. For brush use, you can apply the paint straight or thin it slightly with distilled water or acrylic medium. For airbrush, add a few drops of acrylic thinner until you reach a skimmed-milk consistency.
- Application: apply in thin, successive coats. With a brush, use the layering technique to build up the tone gradually. With an airbrush, work at low pressure (10–15 psi) with light passes to avoid pooling.
- Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Wait for each coat to dry before applying the next.
- Finishing: if you need to varnish, apply a matte or satin varnish once all painting is complete. You can also apply washes and filters over this layer to model the skin.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with warm water immediately after use. For dried residue, use isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated acrylic cleaner.
Usage tips
Building skin tones with layers
Luminous Flesh works very well as a second highlight or transition colour over a darker base tone. Apply the darker tone first, let it dry, then add Luminous Flesh to the raised areas to create a natural, convincing volume. The result is skin with visual depth without needing to resort to complex glazes.
Airbrush use on large pieces
For cosplay or SFX pieces with large surfaces, thin Luminous Flesh to 50–60% with acrylic thinner and work in several light passes. This allows for a smoother gradient and avoids the "plastic" effect that can appear if you apply coats that are too thick. Always protect the finished work with a compatible varnish.
Mixing and skin palette
Luminous Flesh is an excellent starting point for building an entire skin tone palette. Mix equal parts with earth tones or browns from the same Standard range to obtain warm mid-tones, or add small amounts of white for the highest highlights. Being water-based acrylic, mixes are straightforward and repeatable.
Frequently asked questions
Can this paint be used straight from the bottle without thinning?
Yes, Luminous Flesh can be applied directly with a brush in thin coats. For airbrush use, it is recommended to thin it slightly to avoid needle clogs and achieve a more uniform finish.
Is it compatible with other products in the same range?
Yes. Luminous Flesh is fully compatible with the rest of AK Interactive's water-based acrylic paints, as well as their varnishes, washes and acrylic mediums. Feroca, the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain, stocks the complete range so you can build your palette.
How many coats are needed for good coverage?
In general, two or three thin coats of Luminous Flesh over a light primer provide solid, uniform coverage. Applying thin coats always gives better results than a single thick one.
Is it suitable for airbrush?
Yes. The AK Interactive Standard range is formulated to work both with a brush and an airbrush. Thin Luminous Flesh with distilled water or acrylic thinner to a fluid consistency and work at low pressure for best results.
How should it be stored once the bottle has been opened?
Close the bottle tightly after each use and store it upright, away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and shake well before use.
Is it safe for use on cosplay or SFX pieces that come into contact with skin?
Luminous Flesh is a non-toxic water-based acrylic paint, but it is not specifically formulated for cosmetic use or prolonged contact with skin. For direct skin applications in cosplay or SFX, always use products certified for that purpose and apply this paint over intermediate materials such as latex, resin or EVA foam.
