What it is used for
Light Flesh is an essential tone in any palette oriented towards human or humanoid figures. Its value as a base or highlight layer makes it a must-have both in scale modelling projects and in wargame miniatures. Among its most common uses:
- Painting flesh tones on scale military figures (soldiers, pilots, vehicle crew).
- Highlighting and creating colour transitions on wargame miniatures with fair or fantasy skin.
- Representing skin tones on figures for historical or science fiction dioramas.
- Base or accent colour on high-end busts and competition figures.
- Body painting applications and SFX effects in cosplay projects where replicating real skin tones is required.
- Mixing with other tones from the Standard range to create smooth skin transitions on any type of figure.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the figure or miniature is clean, degreased, and has a primer coat applied. A cream or off-white primer makes covering with Light Flesh easier.
- Shake the bottle: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. The high-pigmentation formula can settle if the bottle has been sitting for a while.
- Thinning: For brush application, apply directly or thin with a few drops of distilled water to achieve the desired consistency. For airbrush, thin more generously until you reach the right viscosity for your equipment.
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Light Flesh covers well in 2–3 coats. Allow to dry between each coat (between 10 and 20 minutes at room temperature).
- Full drying: Total drying time depends on coat thickness and environmental conditions. Under normal conditions, the paint is ready to work over in approximately 30 minutes.
- Cleaning: Clean your brush or airbrush with water immediately after finishing. If paint has dried inside the equipment, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.
Usage tips
Building flesh tones with layers
Light Flesh works especially well as a second or third coat over a darker base. First apply a mid-skin tone or Flesh, let it dry, then use Light Flesh on the most highlighted areas: forehead, cheekbones, nose, and chin. This gives you a natural volume without needing to resort to complex glazes from the start.
Mixing to expand your skin palette
Light Flesh is an excellent starting point for creating your own range of skin tones. Adding a small amount of a darker shade from the Standard range gives you a mid skin tone. Mixed with pure white, you can achieve extreme highlights for the final light point on very exposed areas. Experiment on a wet palette before applying directly to the figure.
Airbrush application for base coats or zenithal priming
If you work with pre-shading using an airbrush, thinned Light Flesh is ideal for a zenithal pass over a figure already primed in dark tones. The result is a skin base with built-in volume that greatly simplifies subsequent brush layers. Thin the paint well and work at low pressure to prevent the tone from spreading too much.
Frequently asked questions
Does the paint need to be thinned before use?
It depends on the application method. With a brush, Light Flesh can be applied straight from the bottle or with minimal thinning using distilled water for thinner coats. With an airbrush, more thinning is needed to avoid clogs and achieve a uniform finish. Always test the consistency on a palette before applying to the piece.
Can it be applied over any primer?
Yes. Light Flesh adheres well over both water-based and solvent-based primers. For flesh tones, a light or neutral-coloured primer is recommended so as not to compromise the brightness of the colour. If you are working over a black primer, you will need more coats to achieve full coverage.
Is it compatible with varnishes and washes?
Yes. Once dry, the paint accepts both water-based and solvent-based varnishes without any issues. When applying washes over skin areas painted with Light Flesh, it is recommended to first apply a coat of satin or gloss varnish so the wash flows correctly into the shadow areas without staining the highlights.
How many coats are needed for good coverage?
Under normal conditions, 2 or 3 thin coats provide solid coverage with Light Flesh. Applying very heavy coats can create paint build-up that obscures the detail of the figure. It is preferable to work with thin coats and allow drying time between them.
Can this paint be used in an airbrush without a high-pressure compressor?
Yes. The water-based acrylic formula of Light Flesh is perfectly compatible with domestic-use airbrushes and small-format compressors. Thin the paint appropriately and work at pressures between 15 and 20 PSI as a starting point, adjusting according to your airbrush and the desired effect.
