What it is used for

Basic Skin Tone is the ideal starting point for painting skin on any scale and surface. Its mid-range tone, neither too light nor too dark, makes it a perfect base on which to build highlights and shadows, or to use it directly as a basecoat.

  • Scale model figures: infantry, pilots, crew members and any human or semi-human figure
  • Wargame miniatures: troops, heroes and characters with exposed skin areas
  • Dioramas with figures: civilian inhabitants, soldiers, historical scenes
  • Cosplay and accessories: application on 3D-printed parts, foam or resin to simulate skin
  • SFX effects and character make-up on prosthetics and hard materials
  • Art and miniature sculpture projects requiring realistic flesh tones

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer before painting, especially on plastic, resin or metal. The surface must be clean, dry and free of grease.
  2. Thinning: for brush use, apply Basic Skin Tone straight from the bottle or with 10–20% water or acrylic retarder to improve flow. For airbrush, thin it until you achieve a milk-like consistency (approximately 30–50% thinner).
  3. Application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Two or three coats are sufficient for solid coverage.
  4. Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 1 hour before applying shading layers, washes or varnish.
  5. Finishing: once dry, you can apply washes, zenithal highlights or OSL effects directly over this base to add volume and realism to skin areas.
  6. Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has already dried, use acrylic thinner.

Usage tips

Build up skin in layers

Basic Skin Tone works best as a basecoat over grey or white primer. From there, add shadows with a darker, warmer tone, and reserve the highlights with a lighter, more desaturated tone. This way you achieve skin with real volume without overcomplicating the process.

Mix without hesitation

Being a water-based acrylic paint with high pigmentation, Basic Skin Tone blends effortlessly with other colours from the Standard range by AK Interactive. You can create tone variations for different ethnicities, lighting conditions or physical states of your characters simply by adding a few drops of another colour.

Control the final finish

The finish of this paint can vary between satin and matte depending on the thinning ratio and the surface. If you want a completely matte finish for historical or military figures, apply a matte varnish over the top once the piece is finished. For cosplay or SFX where a more vibrant or translucent look is desired, the satin finish may work perfectly straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need primer before applying this paint?

Yes, using a primer is recommended, especially on plastic, resin or white metal. A good primer base improves the adhesion of Basic Skin Tone and makes the final colour more uniform and long-lasting. AK Interactive offers spray and bottle primers compatible with this range.

Can I use it directly in the airbrush without thinning?

That is not ideal. For airbrush use, Basic Skin Tone needs to be thinned. It is recommended to add between 30 and 50% distilled water or acrylic thinner until a fluid consistency is achieved. Paint that is too thick may clog the needle or produce a grainy finish.

How many coats do I need for full coverage?

Two or three thin coats are usually enough to cover the surface well with Basic Skin Tone. Always apply in thin layers and allow to dry between them. Thick coats can cause cracking or fill in the fine details of the figure.

Is it compatible with washes and shading techniques?

Yes. Once the base coat of Basic Skin Tone is dry, you can apply washes, filters or OSL effects directly over it. For best results with water-based washes, first apply a thin coat of satin varnish to prevent the wash from beading or settling unevenly.

Is the paint suitable for foam surfaces or cosplay materials?

Yes, Basic Skin Tone can be applied to foam, resin and other rigid materials used in cosplay and SFX, as long as the surface has been previously sealed with a compatible primer or flexible sealant. On untreated foam, the paint may crack with movement.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Basic Skin Tone (AK11052) is available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase it directly from the Feroca online store with shipping throughout Spain and Portugal.
