Sand Yellow is a reference colour in scale modelling thanks to its versatility. It covers everything from the North African desert to base tones for fantasy figures and larger-scale creative projects. Some common uses:

• Base colour for armoured vehicles of the Afrika Korps and Axis forces in the North African campaign
• Sand tone for dioramas set in desert or steppe environments
• Base coat for wargame miniatures (infantry, cavalry, pack animals)
• Intermediate layers on historical figures for clothing areas, straps or equipment
• Backgrounds and textures in cosplay and SFX to simulate worn leather, ropes or aged fabric
• Applications in scale architecture and railway modelling

How to use it

1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer before painting. For light colours like Sand Yellow, a white or light grey primer improves coverage and the accuracy of the final shade.
2. Shaking: shake the pot well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The internal mixing ball ensures the pigment is thoroughly homogenised.
3. Thinning: for brush application, you can use the paint straight from the pot or thin it slightly with distilled water. For airbrushing, thin it with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner to the desired consistency (typically between 20% and 40% thinner).
4. Application: apply in thin coats and allow to dry between layers. Two thin coats cover better than one thick coat and prevent loss of detail on carved or raised surfaces.
5. Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. When working with successive layers or varnishes, wait at least one hour.
6. Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still fresh. If it has dried, use a specific AK Interactive acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

Getting the most out of the Sand Yellow shade on military vehicles

Use Sand Yellow as the base colour and work over it with dark washes in the recesses and lighter highlights on raised areas. An occasional orange or brown filter helps break up the uniformity of the colour and adds realistic weathering without losing the characteristic tone.

Integration into miniature and wargame projects

On small-scale figures, apply Sand Yellow as the base coat and then work with the drybrushing technique using a lighter shade to bring out the raised details. The satin finish of the Standard range accepts subsequent washes well without them spreading in an uncontrolled manner.

Thinning and airbrushing

If you use an airbrush, try thinning Sand Yellow at an approximate ratio of 2:1 (paint:thinner) and work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI to achieve a fine, even line. This is especially useful for applying zenithal coats or for colour modulation effects over large surfaces.
