What it is used for

Dark Sand is a reference colour for any modeller working with arid, desert or dry-campaign themes. Its dark earth-sandy tone offers a perfect base or mid-coat for military scenes, figures and natural environments.

  • Base coat or mid-coat on military vehicles with desert camouflage schemes (Africa, Middle East, etc.)
  • Painting infantry and equipment on wargame miniatures
  • Mixing with other tones from the Standard range to create natural transitions and shading
  • Painting diorama bases with arid or semi-arid terrain
  • Application on historical figures in khaki and sand-coloured uniforms
  • Use in cosplay or SFX projects to reproduce aged, dusty or worn surfaces

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. If the paint has not been used for a while, insert a mixing ball (if included) or stir with a clean toothpick.
  2. Thinning: For brush painting, apply directly or thin slightly with water or acrylic thinner. For airbrushing, thin until you achieve a consistency similar to whole milk; start with an approximate ratio of 1:1 and adjust according to your equipment.
  3. Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Two thin coats are always preferable to one thick coat that may obscure details on miniatures or scale models.
  4. Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes at room temperature. For full drying before applying additional coats or varnish, wait at least 1 hour.
  5. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still fresh. If the paint has already dried on the equipment, use a specific acrylic thinner.

Tips and tricks

How to integrate Dark Sand into a desert camouflage scheme

Dark Sand works as an intermediate base coat between lighter and darker tones. Apply it first over the primer and then highlight with lighter tones from the Standard range towards the raised areas. For shading, mix with a darker unsaturated tone or use a wash to accentuate details and recesses.

Mixing and colour modulation

Being a water-based acrylic paint, Dark Sand mixes seamlessly with all other colours in the AK Interactive Standard range. For a warmer tone, add a small amount of an orange-earth shade. To cool it down or desaturate it, mix with a neutral grey. These mixes are especially useful when painting miniatures with light and shadow modulation techniques (Non-Metallic Metal or zenithal).

Airbrush tips

A 0.3 mm or 0.4 mm needle will give you optimal results. Thin the paint enough to flow without spattering, but without losing coverage. On small pieces or miniatures, reduce the pressure to 10–15 PSI and work at a close distance for greater control. If you are applying over a darker base, you may need an additional coat to achieve full coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to prime before applying this paint?

Although Dark Sand has good adhesion on plastic, resin and white metal, applying a primer beforehand is recommended. This improves long-term adhesion, protects the piece and allows the Dark Sand colour to show its true tone without interference from the base material. AK Interactive offers spray and bottle primers specifically designed for modelling.

Can I apply this paint directly with an airbrush without thinning?

This is not recommended. Acrylic paints from the Standard range, including Dark Sand, need some thinning to flow correctly through the airbrush without clogging the needle. A starting ratio of 1:1 with water or acrylic thinner usually works well, although the ideal ratio should be adjusted according to your equipment and working pressure.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

Dark Sand is touch-dry in around 15–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply a second coat without risking lifting the previous one, wait between 30 and 60 minutes. If you plan to varnish, it is best to wait at least 12–24 hours to ensure the paint has cured correctly.

Can this paint be used on 3D-printed surfaces?

Yes. Dark Sand adheres well to photopolymer resins (the type commonly used in FDM and SLA printing), provided the surface has been properly cleaned, sanded where necessary and primed. It is a very versatile colour for wargame pieces or dioramas 3D-printed with an arid theme.

Where can I buy this paint with a guarantee of genuine product?

Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, so purchasing Dark Sand (AK11033) through their store guarantees you a genuine product, up-to-date stock and specialist support for modelling and miniature painting.

Is this paint suitable for use in cosplay or special effects?

Dark Sand can be used on materials such as foam, foam-clay or cardboard for cosplay and prop projects. Its water-based acrylic formula makes cleaning and mixing with other colours easy. For very flexible surfaces, applying a flexible sealant afterwards is recommended to prevent cracking.
