Pale Sand is an acrylic paint from the Standard range by AK Interactive, formulated with high pigmentation and a water-based formula to provide solid, even coverage in one or two coats. Its light sand tone makes it an essential resource for desert vehicles, uniforms, diorama bases, and weathered surfaces. Available in a 17 ml bottle, it is compatible with both brush and airbrush. Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain.

What it is used for

Pale Sand is a versatile colour that appears repeatedly in any project involving arid, weathered, or warm neutral-toned surfaces. Its most common applications are:

  • Base coat or first layer on military vehicles with desert schemes (Panzergelb, North Africa, etc.)
  • Painting sand-coloured infantry uniforms for historical scale figures
  • Highlights over brown or tan colours on wargame miniatures
  • Diorama bases: sandy ground, desert sand, accumulated dust on surfaces
  • Weathering and chipping layers prior to washes and filters
  • Mixing with other colours from the Standard range to create smooth light transitions
  • Cosplay and SFX applications for ageing and dusty effects on foam, resin, or latex pieces

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the surface is clean, dry, and primed. For plastic or resin, a grey or white primer will enhance the brightness of Pale Sand.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. The high pigmentation means the pigment can settle over time.
  3. Thinning: for brush use, apply straight from the bottle or with a drop of water or acrylic thinner. For airbrush, thin it until you achieve a skimmed-milk consistency (approximately 1:1 or 1:1.5 ratio depending on the compressor and psi).
  4. Application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats (10–15 minutes at room temperature). Two coats are usually sufficient for full coverage.
  5. Final drying: full drying time is approximately 24 hours before applying washes, filters, or varnishes on top.
  6. Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use acrylic thinner.

Tips and tricks

Pale Sand as a highlight colour

Pale Sand works excellently as a highlight tone over brown, ochre, or muted yellow base colours. Apply it in progressively more diluted layers over edges and areas most exposed to light to achieve a very natural zenithal painting finish with no hard transitions.

Recommended mixes within the range

If you need a darker tone, mix Pale Sand with a brown from the Standard range to obtain a shaded sand colour. If you want more brightness, add a touch of white. Always stay within the water-based acrylic range to ensure perfect compatibility and uniform drying.

Airbrush use for vehicles

For desert camouflage schemes on scale vehicles, thin it with AK Interactive acrylic thinner and work at low pressure (12–15 psi) to achieve soft, blended edges. A second, more concentrated pass in the centre of panels adds tonal variation without the need to change colour.

Frequently asked questions

Is primer required before applying this paint?

It is highly recommended. AK11032 Pale Sand, like the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range, adheres better and covers more evenly over a primer coat. On unprimed plastic, it may show reduced long-term adhesion.

Can it be used directly in an airbrush without thinning?

It is not ideal. The factory consistency of Pale Sand is designed for brush use. For airbrush, add acrylic thinner or distilled water until you achieve the right fluidity. Using it unthinned may clog the needle or leave an uneven texture on the surface.

Is it compatible with washes and filters applied on top?

Yes, but it is recommended to seal it first with a matte or satin varnish. Pale Sand, once dry, can be slightly reactivated by the solvents in some effects products. An intermediate varnish protects the colour layer and ensures a clean result.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

Under normal conditions (around 20 °C and moderate humidity), each coat of Pale Sand is touch dry in 10–15 minutes. To work with successive coats without risk of lifting the previous one, wait at least 20–30 minutes.

Is it suitable for wargame miniatures as well as scale models?

Absolutely. AK Interactive designs its Standard range for all types of modellers. Pale Sand is especially useful on wargame miniatures for painting desert bases, creature skins in neutral tones, or aged armour, both with dry brushing and thin layering.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase AK11032 Pale Sand directly from the Feroca online store, with shipping to mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla.
