What it is used for

Buff is an incredibly useful base and modulation colour across multiple modelling and creative painting disciplines. Its versatility makes it indispensable in projects of very different kinds:

  • Base and transition colour for desert military vehicles (North African sand, Middle East, etc.)
  • Painting uniforms and field equipment on scale military figures
  • Representing worn surfaces, dry dust and light earth in dioramas
  • Highlighting mix over browns and earth tones on wargame miniatures
  • Base for skin, bone and leather effects on fantasy and science fiction miniatures
  • Application on cosplay pieces or props to simulate worn and aged surfaces
  • Use in SFX effects for ageing materials and arid textures

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, free of grease and properly primed. A grey or white primer enhances the brightness of Buff.
  2. Thinning: for brush application, thin it with water or acrylic medium at a 1:1 ratio or according to the desired effect. For airbrush, add more thinner until you achieve a fluid consistency without losing coverage.
  3. Application: apply in thin, even layers. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next to achieve clean coverage and avoid build-up.
  4. Drying: touch-dry time is quick, around 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. For subsequent layers or varnishing, wait at least 1 hour.
  5. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If the paint has dried on your equipment, use isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

Mixing and colour modulation

Buff works wonderfully when mixed with whites and yellows to lighten earth and sand tones without losing warmth. You can also add small amounts to dark browns to achieve natural highlights on uniforms or leather. As this is a highly pigmented range, a small amount of Buff is enough to noticeably modify another colour.

Dust and weathering effects

Thinned down to very fine glazes, Buff is ideal for depositing a veil of sand and dust over vehicles, figure boots or diorama bases. Apply with a dry brush or airbrush at low pressure to simulate the accumulation of fine grime on horizontal surfaces and recesses.

Pot preservation

Store the pot upright, tightly closed and away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and shake well before use. Inverting the pot for a few seconds before opening helps to homogenise the pigment.

Frequently asked questions

Is it compatible with an airbrush?

Yes. Buff AK11031 can be used without any problem in an airbrush. Thin it with water or a specific medium until you achieve the right consistency for your equipment. A thinning ratio of between 1:1 and 1:2 (paint:thinner) usually works well at standard working pressures.

Do I need a primer before applying this paint?

On most surfaces, a prior primer is recommended to improve adhesion and coverage. On plastic, resin or metal, a primer ensures that Buff covers evenly and that subsequent layers hold well.

Can I mix it with other paints from the range?

Absolutely. The paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are miscible with one another. You can mix Buff with any other colour in the range to create custom transitions, highlights or shadows without affecting consistency or drying time.

How long does it take to dry?

Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Buff AK11031 is touch-dry in 15–30 minutes. To apply a second coat or varnish, it is best to wait at least one hour. Full deep-drying may take longer if the layers are thick.

What finish does this paint give?

The finish of Buff varies between satin and matte depending on the thinning ratio, the number of layers and the application surface. For a completely matte finish or to prepare the piece for washes and filters, it is recommended to apply a matte varnish over the top once the paint is dry.
