Black (AK11029) is the black acrylic paint from AK Interactive's Standard range, formulated with high-concentration pigments for dense, uniform coverage from the very first coat. Its water-based formula makes cleaning and thinning easy, and it works equally well with a brush or airbrush, making it an essential reference on any workbench. Feroca is the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain.

What it is used for

Black is one of the most versatile and widely used colours in scale modelling and miniature painting. Black AK11029 covers an enormous variety of uses, from basecoating to advanced effects:

  • Base and colour primer for military vehicle models, aircraft and scale ships.
  • Mandatory basecoat before applying metallic paints or Super Chrome effects to maximise shine and reflection.
  • Deep shadows and line shading on wargame miniatures.
  • Filling panel lines, grilles and raised details on dioramas and scale vehicles.
  • Dark areas and burnt or charred effects on cosplay pieces and props.
  • Base for SFX effects such as bruises, burns or carbonised materials.
  • Painting eyes, pupils and hair on historical and fantasy figures.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, grease-free and properly primed. A spray primer (AK Sprays range) noticeably improves adhesion.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before opening. Pigment can settle at the bottom.
  3. Thinning: for brush application, use it straight from the bottle or with a small amount of distilled water. For airbrush, thin 20–30% with distilled water or a specific AK thinner until you reach a skimmed-milk consistency.
  4. Application: apply in thin, even coats. The highly pigmented black covers easily, but two thin coats are always preferable to one thick coat to avoid obscuring detail.
  5. Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes; fully dry in 1–2 hours at room temperature. Moderate heat (such as a hairdryer on a low setting) speeds up the process.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with warm water immediately after use. If the paint has dried inside the airbrush, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Tips and tricks

Perfect base for metallics and chrome effects

If you plan to apply paints from the Xtreme Metal range or the Super Chrome effect (AK9198), a well-cured coat of Black is the mandatory starting point. The smoother and darker the base, the greater the reflection and shine of the final metallic finish. Sand lightly between coats if you are aiming for a mirror-like result.

Zenithal priming technique

Apply Black as a full basecoat and, once dry, add a light coat of a pale colour from the zenithal angle (from above). This creates a natural gradient of lights and shadows that greatly accelerates the highlighting process on miniatures and figures.

Controlling the final finish

The finish of Black can range between satin and matt depending on thinning and the number of coats. If you need an absolutely matt black for shadow areas, apply a matt varnish in spray once the paint is dry. For leather or rubber areas on vehicles, the slight natural satin is sufficient without any additional varnish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this paint directly without priming the piece?

It is possible, but not recommended. Priming improves adhesion and prevents the paint from chipping over time. For plastic or resin miniatures, a prior priming coat makes a real difference to the durability of the final finish. AK Interactive offers dedicated spray primers for each type of material.

Is this paint compatible with an airbrush?

Yes. Black AK11029 can be airbrushed by thinning it 20–30% with distilled water or a specific acrylic thinner. Use a 0.3 mm needle or larger to avoid clogging. Clean the airbrush with warm water when you are finished.

How many coats do I need for opaque coverage?

Thanks to the high pigmentation of AK Interactive's Standard range, one or two thin coats are sufficient on most properly primed surfaces. On very light surfaces or unprimed metal, a third coat may be necessary.

Can I mix it with other acrylic paints from the same range?

Yes. All paints in AK Interactive's Standard range are fully compatible with each other. You can mix Black with any other colour in the range to obtain greys, gradients or darker shades. Use a wet mixing palette to keep the paint workable for longer.

How long does it take to dry completely?

It is touch-dry in approximately 15–20 minutes at room temperature. Full drying (curing) occurs between 1 and 2 hours. Always wait for complete curing before applying masking tape or varnishes to avoid lifting the paint layer.
