What it is used for

Sky Grey is a cool grey with aerial undertones, originally designed to reproduce the paint schemes of military and civilian aircraft in scale. Its versatility also makes it an excellent choice for neutral base coats, soft shadows and urban finishes in any type of project.

  • Painting fuselages and undersurfaces of scale aircraft (1:72, 1:48, 1:32)
  • Uniforms and equipment of modern military figures
  • Armoured vehicles with NATO or Nordic camouflage schemes
  • Bases and terrain for urban or winter dioramas
  • Wargame miniatures: metal armour, clothing and tactical equipment
  • Cosplay and SFX: shadow areas, aged metal effects and armour finishes

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer before painting. For plastic or resin surfaces, a spray primer from the AK Interactive range ensures optimal adhesion.
  2. Shake well: shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds before opening. The inner mixing ball helps homogenise the pigment.
  3. Thinning: for brush use, try it straight or with a drop of water or acrylic thinner. For airbrush, thin it until you achieve a skimmed-milk consistency, adjusting pressure between 15 and 20 PSI.
  4. Application: apply in thin, successive coats. Sky Grey covers well in 2 coats over a light base; over dark backgrounds an extra coat may be needed.
  5. Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in 24 hours before applying washes, filters or varnishes.
  6. Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water or water-based acrylic thinner immediately after use.

Tips and tricks

Work in thin coats

AK Interactive Standard acrylic paints are formulated to give their best results in light, progressive layers. Avoid overloading the brush on each pass: you will achieve better colour control and a cleaner finish without losing surface detail.

Sky Grey as a base for colour modulation techniques

The neutral, cool tone of Sky Grey makes it an ideal starting point for colour modulation techniques. Add white or a warmer tone to highlighted areas and mix in a darker grey for shadows. The water-based formula allows direct palette mixing without awkward drying times.

Combining with washes and filters

Once cured, Sky Grey takes enamel- or acrylic-based washes from the AK Interactive range very well, enhancing recesses and adding depth. If you want a more matte and realistic finish, apply a matte varnish in spray before applying weathering and ageing effects.

Frequently asked questions

Does this paint need to be thinned for airbrush use?

Yes, it is generally advisable to thin Sky Grey before running it through an airbrush. The exact dilution depends on your equipment, but as a starting point add water or acrylic thinner until you achieve a fluid consistency. Work at a pressure of 15 to 20 PSI and do a test on cardboard before painting the piece.

Can I use this paint directly on plastic without primer?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. Without primer, the adhesion of Sky Grey on smooth plastic can be poor and the paint tends to peel off with handling. A spray or brush-on primer from the AK Interactive range extends the durability of the work and improves the final result.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

Sky Grey is touch-dry in around 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply a second coat without risk of lifting the previous one, wait between 20 and 30 minutes. For washes or varnishes, the ideal is to wait 24 hours for full curing.

Is this paint suitable for wargame miniatures?

Yes. Sky Grey works very well on wargame miniatures, both for neutral base coats and for armour, tactical equipment and aged metallic surfaces. Its high pigmentation allows coverage in just a few coats, which speeds up the process when working with large numbers of miniatures.

Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?

Yes. All paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are compatible with each other and mix directly on the palette. You can lighten Sky Grey with white, darken it with deeper greys or add a warm touch by mixing colours from the same range to personalise the tone to your liking.
