What it is used for
Medium Grey is one of those colours you can never have too many of on your palette. It is a neutral mid-tone grey, perfect as a base coat, fill colour or starting point for blending. You will find it on the workbenches of modellers, wargamers, cosplayers and special effects artists.
- Base coat and colour layer on scale military vehicles, tanks and armoured vehicles.
- Painting aircraft, both civil and military aviation models.
- Base colour for wargame miniatures: metal armour, stone structures or urban elements.
- Blending to achieve lighter or darker greys without losing chromatic coherence.
- Dioramas: pavements, concrete walls, industrial surfaces or machinery.
- Cosplay and SFX: priming and base coating on foam, resin or plastic pieces.
- Starting point for zenithal lighting techniques or Non-Metallic Metal (NMM).
How to use it
- Surface preparation: clean and degrease the piece. Apply a primer compatible with acrylics if working on metal or very smooth surfaces.
- Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The high pigmentation requires thorough mixing.
- Thinning: for brush use, apply straight from the bottle or with a few drops of distilled water or a retarder medium. For airbrush, thin by 20–30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner.
- Application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats (10–15 minutes under normal conditions).
- Full drying: full curing is reached after 24 hours. Avoid handling the piece roughly before that time.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. Once dry, you will need isopropyl alcohol or a specific acrylic cleaner.
Tips and tricks
Getting the most out of Medium Grey
This shade works exceptionally well as a mid-tone volume colour. Mix Medium Grey with white for highlights and with a dark grey or black for shadows: you will get a coherent triad ready to use without needing any additional colours. It is especially useful on vehicles and structures where grey is the dominant colour.
Integration into shading and washing techniques
As a mid-tone base, it takes dark washes well without losing definition. Apply the wash once the Medium Grey base coat is dry, allow it to settle and remove the excess with a clean, dry brush. Then recover the highlights with a lightened mix of the same colour to maintain coherence.
Airbrush use on large surfaces
Thinning Medium Grey by 25–30% with distilled water and working at a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi, you will achieve a smooth, mark-free coverage on hulls, panzers, aircraft fuselages or large cosplay pieces. The high pigmentation of the Standard range ensures you will not need more than two passes for solid coverage.
Frequently asked questions
Does the paint need to be thinned before brush use?
It depends on the result you are looking for. Medium Grey can be applied straight from the bottle for dense coverage. If you want thinner coats or to work with glazes, add a few drops of distilled water until you reach the desired consistency.
Is it compatible with an airbrush?
Yes. Medium Grey from AK Interactive's Standard range is formulated for use with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush, thin it by 20 to 30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner and work at a moderate pressure.
What surfaces can it be applied to?
It works well on plastic, resin, metal and foam that have been previously primed. For metallic or very smooth surfaces, it is recommended to apply a primer coat first to improve adhesion.
Can a varnish be applied over it once dry?
Yes. Once fully cured (24 hours), Medium Grey accepts matte, satin or gloss acrylic varnishes without any issues. Always apply the varnish in thin coats to avoid reactivating the underlying paint.
How long does it take to dry?
It is touch dry in 10–15 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Full curing, when the coat is truly resistant to handling and washing, occurs at approximately 24 hours.
