What it is used for

Grimy Grey is a dirty, muted, low-saturation grey that is extremely versatile within the modelling palette. It is especially useful when you need to represent worn surfaces, accumulated dirt or industrial materials with no sheen. It is used across a wide variety of projects:

  • Base coats on military vehicles, industrial machinery and concrete elements in scale models.
  • Shading and zenithal highlighting on wargame miniatures to reinforce the sense of depth.
  • Mixing with other tones from the Standard range to achieve aged greys or worn earthy shades.
  • Representation of rusted or painted metals in armoured vehicle dioramas.
  • Dirt and dust effects integrated into figures and diorama bases.
  • Applications in cosplay and SFX to give the appearance of worn materials or damaged surfaces.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is primed with a suitable base coat, clean and free of dust or grease. A grey or black primer enhances the depth of Grimy Grey.
  2. Shaking: Shake the dropper bottle well with the cap closed for at least 30 seconds. The high pigmentation requires the pigments to be fully in suspension before applying.
  3. Thinning: For brush application, apply directly or with a slight dilution in water (5–15%). For airbrush, thin by 20–30% depending on working pressure and nozzle type.
  4. Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next to avoid lifting and to achieve a homogeneous coverage.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry time is around 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Wait at least 30 minutes before working on top.
  6. Cleanup: Clean the brush or airbrush with water. For dried residue in the airbrush nozzle, use water with a few drops of acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

Mixes and gradients

Grimy Grey works very well as an intermediate colour in gradients. Combining it with darker tones from the Standard range yields cool, convincing shadows, while adding lighter colours produces natural highlights without losing that characteristic dirty look. It is a reference tone for any military vehicle or urban structure palette.

Weathering and ageing effects

Apply Grimy Grey irregularly over metallic or painted surfaces to simulate the accumulation of dirt, dust or aged paint. Thin it considerably (40–50%) and apply it as a glaze over specific areas: lower edges of vehicles, building corners in dioramas or armour seams. The result is very organic and requires little time.

Airbrush use for zenithal highlighting

Grimy Grey is a perfect candidate for the intermediate stage of zenithal highlighting. After a black base coat, apply Grimy Grey from a 45-degree angle to define the mid-tones before moving on to the final highlights. The high pigmentation ensures a clean transition even at low pressures and with 0.3 mm nozzles or smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be thinned with regular tap water?

Yes, Grimy Grey is a water-based acrylic paint and can be thinned with tap water. However, for best results with an airbrush it is recommended to use distilled or demineralised water, as this avoids limescale and does not alter the surface tension of the mixture.

Do I need a primer before applying this paint?

On most porous surfaces such as resin, plastic or metal, priming significantly improves adhesion. Grimy Grey has good pigmentation, but without primer on smooth plastic it may present long-term adhesion issues, especially if the piece is going to be handled.

Which type of varnish is it compatible with?

Grimy Grey is compatible with water-based acrylic varnishes, whether matt, satin or gloss. For weathering effects using chipping techniques or subsequent washes, it is recommended to apply an intermediate gloss varnish before working on top, which also makes it easier to remove mistakes.

Can it be used straight from the bottle or does it always need to be thinned?

For brush application in coverage coats you can apply Grimy Grey straight from the bottle or with minimal thinning. For glazes, mixes or airbrush use, thin it according to your needs. The formula is balanced to be workable in both situations without losing coverage.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. The AK Interactive Standard range, to which Grimy Grey belongs, is designed for all types of modellers regardless of their skill level. The water-based formula makes cleanup easy and drying times are manageable, giving you room to correct mistakes before the paint fully hardens.
