What it is used for

Light Grey is a versatile light grey shade with a very wide range of applications. It covers everything from armoured vehicle interiors and aircraft fuselages to uniforms, modern equipment and architectural surfaces in dioramas. It also works as a base for gradients and as a starting point for highlights and lightening over darker greys.

  • Tanks, armoured vehicles and modern military vehicles with grey schemes or NATO camouflage
  • Fuselages and undersides of civilian and military aircraft
  • Vehicle interiors, engine compartments and hatches
  • Wargame miniatures: metal armour, equipment and urban structures
  • Science fiction figures, robots and exoskeletons in dioramas
  • Cosplay pieces and props with a painted metal or industrial plastic effect
  • Building models, infrastructure and scenery for board games
  • Highlighting base over medium and dark greys

How to use it

  1. Priming: Apply a suitable primer to the piece before painting. For Light Grey, a grey or white primer gives the best results in terms of colour accuracy.
  2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before opening. Standard acrylic paint can settle over time.
  3. Thinning: For brush application, use it straight from the bottle or add one drop of water for every two drops of paint. For airbrush, thin between 20% and 30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you reach a skimmed-milk consistency.
  4. Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Two thin coats cover better than one thick coat and prevent loss of detail on raised areas and engravings.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry is reached in 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Allow to dry completely between coats (30–60 minutes) before applying washes, filters or varnishes.
  6. Cleanup: Clean the brush or airbrush with warm water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use acrylic thinner.

Tips and tricks

Gradients and colour modulation

Light Grey is ideal as the maximum highlight tone (zenithal highlight) over darker greys. Mix it progressively with the base tone of your scheme to create smooth transitions without harsh jumps. On wargame miniatures, a light drybrush of Light Grey over edges and raised areas adds visual depth with very little effort.

Airbrush use on large surfaces

Thinned to 25–30% with distilled water and at a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI, Light Grey behaves in a very controlled manner on armoured vehicle or fuselage surfaces. For the zenithal lighting effect, reduce the pressure and work from above with quick passes. Clean the airbrush with water between sessions to avoid blockages.

Compatibility with AK Interactive products

This paint is fully compatible with the washes, filters, varnishes and effects from the AK Interactive range. Always apply a matt or satin finish varnish before washes to protect the base paint and make it easier to remove the excess. Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, stocks the full range of auxiliaries to complete your workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to thin the paint before using it with an airbrush?

Yes. AK Interactive Standard acrylic paints like Light Grey are formulated for brush use straight from the bottle, but for airbrush it is advisable to thin them between 20% and 30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. The ideal consistency is similar to skimmed milk: it flows well without losing coverage.

Can I apply it directly onto plastic without a primer?

It is technically possible, but not recommended. Without a primer, the paint has less adhesion and is more vulnerable to rubbing and chipping. A suitable primer ensures that Light Grey and subsequent layers remain in perfect condition over the long term.

How many coats do I need to cover a dark surface properly?

Over dark backgrounds, the most effective approach is to first apply one or two coats of grey or white primer, and then Light Grey in two thin coats. Trying to cover a black background directly with light greys in a single coat often gives uneven results and uses more paint.

How long should I wait between coats?

Light Grey reaches touch-dry in around 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply a second coat safely, it is ideal to wait between 30 and 60 minutes. Before applying washes or varnishes, it is advisable to allow at least 2 hours of drying time, or speed up the process with a warm-air dryer.

Is it suitable for use on resin and white metal pieces?

Yes. AK Interactive's Light Grey adheres well to resin and white metal as long as the surface is clean, degreased and properly primed. In the case of white metal, a dedicated adhesion primer noticeably improves the final results.
