What it is used for
Ivory is one of those versatile colours that appears in almost any project. Its ivory tone works as a base colour, as an extreme highlight or as a mixing colour to soften other shades. Some common uses:
- Highlights and zenithal shading on fantasy, sci-fi and wargame miniatures such as Warhammer
- Base coat for skin tones and flesh colours on historical and period figures
- Representation of bone, ivory, porcelain and light fabric surfaces in dioramas
- Ageing and weathering on white or cream uniforms of military vehicles and aircraft
- Painting decorative elements on architecture and interior scale models
- Cosplay and SFX applications for skin bases, prosthetics and ageing effects
How to use it
- Surface preparation: always apply a suitable primer before painting. For light colours like Ivory, a white or light grey primer is recommended to preserve the brightness of the tone.
- Shake the bottle: shake well for 30–60 seconds before use to homogenise the pigment.
- Brush: thin with water or acrylic medium by 10–20% if you want greater flow. Apply in thin coats and allow to dry between them.
- Airbrush: thin by 20–30% with distilled water or acrylic thinner. Recommended pressure between 15 and 20 psi for thin, controlled coats.
- Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in 24 hours before applying varnishes or weathering techniques over the coat.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap or a water-based acrylic cleaner immediately after use.
Tips and advice
Ivory as a highlight colour
Adding small amounts of Ivory to any base tone is the quickest way to create natural highlights without losing the saturation of the original colour. It is especially effective in NMM (Non-Metallic Metal) techniques and when painting fabrics and uniforms.
Thin coats for better results
Being a very light tone, Ivory tends to lose definition if applied too thickly. Always work in thin, progressive coats, especially when using it to highlight specific areas of a figure. Two or three well-thinned coats give better results than a single dense coat.
Compatibility with weathering techniques
Once dry and sealed with varnish, Ivory responds very well to AK Interactive filters and washes. On light surfaces, earth and sepia tones create very convincing dirt and ageing effects on uniforms, resin or plaster surfaces and diorama elements.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a primer before using this paint?
Yes, it is always recommended to prime the surface before applying Ivory (AK11004). A white or light grey primer ensures better adhesion and maintains the brightness of the ivory tone, especially on plastic, resin or metal.
Can I use this paint with an airbrush?
Yes, Ivory is formulated for both brush and airbrush. Thin it by 20–30% with distilled water or acrylic thinner and work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi to achieve thin, even coats.
How long does this acrylic paint take to dry?
Ivory is touch-dry in approximately 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For a full cure that allows varnishes or weathering techniques to be applied on top, wait at least 24 hours.
How do I clean the brush or airbrush after using it?
As it is a water-based paint, cleaning is done with water and soap or a water-based acrylic cleaner. It is important to clean your tools immediately after use to prevent the paint from drying on the brush or in the airbrush.
Is it compatible with varnishes and weathering products?
Yes. Once cured and sealed with varnish, Ivory is fully compatible with AK Interactive filters, washes and weathering products. Prior sealing is especially important if you plan to use solvent-based products over the paint layer.
