What it is used for
The Playmarker Gold is designed to apply golden colour quickly, cleanly and in a controlled manner on any modelling or creative painting project. Its felt tip lets you work on small areas with a level of precision that is hard to achieve with a conventional brush in hard-to-reach spots.
- Painting golden details on wargame miniatures (buckles, jewels, ornaments, emblems).
- Applying colour to scale models of historical vehicles, aircraft and military figures.
- Quick sketches and colour tests on diorama projects.
- Painting accessories and decorative elements for cosplay and props.
- Golden effects and touch-ups on SFX and artistic characterisation work.
- Painting resin and white-metal figures with high adhesion and no need for prior thinning.
How to use it
- Prepare the surface: clean the piece of dust, grease or mould-release residue. It is recommended to apply a white primer coat before using the Playmarker Gold to achieve maximum coverage and colour accuracy.
- Prime the marker: shake well before use. The first time, press the tip gently on a test surface until the paint flows evenly through the felt tip.
- Apply the paint: work with smooth, steady strokes. As it is a high-coverage water-based acrylic, one or two coats are usually enough to cover well over a white primer.
- Let it dry: the paint dries quickly in the air. Wait until the coat is completely dry before applying a second layer or moving on to the shading and weathering effects stage.
- Apply effects and varnish: once dry, you can work over it with any weathering product without risk of lifting the paint. If you want to change the satin finish to matte or gloss, simply apply your preferred varnish without any issues.
- Cleaning: remove fresh paint residue with water. If the tip becomes saturated or worn, replace it with a new felt tip compatible with the Playmarker range.
Usage tips
Primer and base colour
Although the Playmarker Gold can be applied directly to many surfaces, using a white primer beforehand makes a real difference. The Gold colour gains luminosity and warmth over a white base, while on dark surfaces it may lose saturation and require more coats.
Thin coats for greater control
Take advantage of the acrylic nature of the Playmarker Gold to work in thin, overlapping layers. This will allow you to control the intensity of the gold and create natural transitions towards darker or metallic colours in shadow areas. The paint is suitable for wet blending while still fresh.
Weathering and subsequent finishes
Once dry, the Gold colour withstands the usual weathering processes: washes, pigments, chipping and filters can all be applied over it without lifting the base coat. If you prefer a finish other than the colour's natural satin, a matte or gloss varnish applied by brush or airbrush will adjust it to your liking without altering the colour.
Frequently asked questions
Can this type of marker be used on any surface without prior preparation?
The Playmarker Gold is formulated to adhere to plastic, resin, metal and wood. Even so, it is recommended to clean the piece thoroughly and apply a white primer before use. On porous or very smooth unprepared surfaces, adhesion may be lower and the colour may not cover as evenly.
Can I apply washes and weathering effects over it without the paint lifting?
Yes. Once dry, the Playmarker Gold withstands the application of washes, pigments, filters and other weathering products. AK Interactive's acrylic formula is designed to handle these processes without the need for an intermediate varnish coat, although applying a protective varnish layer is always good practice before aggressive weathering stages.
Can I change the satin finish to matte or gloss?
No problem. The Playmarker Gold has a satin finish due to the nature of its pigments, but it accepts any type of varnish over it — matte, satin or gloss — without altering the colour or damaging the paint layer. You can apply it by brush or airbrush.
Can the paint from this marker be mixed with other acrylic paints?
Yes. As it is a water-based acrylic paint, the contents of the Playmarker Gold are compatible with the rest of AK Interactive's acrylic range. You can extract paint from the marker and mix it on a palette with other water-based acrylic paints to create tone variations or adjust coverage.
Is it necessary to varnish the piece before applying decals over areas painted with this marker?
It is recommended to apply a gloss varnish coat before placing decals on any painted surface, including those painted with the Playmarker Gold. This ensures a smooth surface that prevents the silvering effect (a silvery halo around the decal) and makes decal adhesion easier.
