What it is used for
The Playmarker Purple is a versatile tool that covers a wide range of applications within modelling, miniatures and other creative disciplines. Its felt tip allows precise control even in hard-to-reach areas.
- Painting wargame miniatures (infantry, monsters, sorcerers) where purple is a recurring colour for robes, magical energies and faction colour schemes.
- Applying base coats or build-up layers on scale models with decorative areas or markings in Purple.
- Creating ambient light effects or energy plasma on science fiction and fantasy dioramas.
- Painting details on cosplay figures or props where a durable, handling-resistant finish is needed.
- SFX and artistic make-up work requiring vivid colours with good adhesion on non-porous materials.
- Quick colour sketching on pieces before moving on to airbrushing or fine brush work.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Clean the piece thoroughly to remove any grease or dust. Apply a white primer before using the Playmarker Purple to maximise coverage and colour accuracy.
- Priming the marker: Shake the marker with the cap on for 10–15 seconds. Press the tip gently on a test surface until the paint flows evenly.
- Application: Apply the colour with smooth, even strokes. The Playmarker allows you to work in layers: let each layer dry before adding the next to build opacity or create transitions. You can also blend wet-on-wet on the surface to achieve gradients and blending effects.
- Weathering effects: Once the paint is dry, you can apply any AK Interactive weathering product without risk of lifting the base colour.
- Varnishing: If you want to change the satin finish or protect the piece, apply a matt, satin or gloss varnish. The Playmarker paint is fully compatible with any varnish with no risk of reactivation.
- Cleaning: Clean the tip with a damp cloth if it becomes saturated with pigment. The tips are, so you can swap it out when it becomes worn.
Usage tips
White primer: don't skip it
Purple is a colour that, although it has good coverage, benefits greatly from a light base. AK Interactive always recommends using white primer before applying Playmarkers so that the colour is true and saturation is at its maximum from the very first layer. If you start from grey or black plastic, you will need more coats and the result may differ from what you expect.
Blending and transitions on miniatures
Work wet: apply Purple to the area you want to cover and, before it dries, blend the edges with a clean or slightly damp tip. This allows you to create smooth transitions from Purple towards highlights or shadows without the need for additional tools. The acrylic formula provides enough working time for this type of technique.
Tip management
If you notice that the paint flow cuts out or the tip accumulates dry pigment, press gently on paper until the flow is restored. Do not force the tip or submerge it in water, as this could deform it. Remember that Playmarker tips are, so if it is badly worn, it is easier to replace it than to try to restore it.
Frequently asked questions
Can the marker paint be diluted or mixed with water?
The Playmarker Purple paint is formulated to be used directly from the marker. You can slightly dampen the surface or the tip to facilitate blending, but it is not intended to be thinned on a palette like conventional paint. If you need to adjust the viscosity, work wet directly on the piece.
Can I use this marker on resin or FDM printed surfaces?
Yes. The Playmarker Purple adheres perfectly to resin and FDM plastic. It is advisable to lightly sand any visible print layers and apply white primer before painting, to achieve a uniform surface and maximise colour adhesion.
Can the satin finish be changed to matt?
Yes. Once the paint is dry, apply a matt varnish on top and the finish will become completely matte. The Playmarker Purple is compatible with any type of varnish, whether matt, satin or gloss, with no risk of damaging the colour layer.
How long does the marker paint last once opened?
If you store the Playmarker with the cap tightly closed and away from heat sources or direct light, the paint retains its properties for a prolonged period. The water-based acrylic can dry out if the cap does not seal properly, so always check that it is correctly sealed after each use.
Is it suitable for use on cosplay props or accessories?
Yes. The Playmarker Purple paint resists handling and moderate heat, making it suitable for cosplay pieces made from materials such as foam, plastic or resin. For greater durability on pieces that will be subject to heavy handling, it is recommended to seal with a protective varnish once application is complete.
