What it is used for

Sio-2 ARGILA Red clay is a general-purpose potter's clay suitable from the classroom to the professional workshop. Its fine grind and balanced plasticity make it particularly well suited for:

  • Freehand modelling: figures, reliefs and decorative sculptures
  • Wheel throwing on a ceramic wheel
  • Small and medium-format sculpture
  • Making functional pieces (cups, bowls, vases) suitable for firing
  • Educational use in schools, art workshops and occupational therapy
  • Prototypes and models to be fired and glazed
  • Decorative applications with ceramic glazes once the piece is fired

How to use it

  1. Conditioning: Open the vacuum packaging and knead the clay thoroughly by hand until it is homogeneous and free of air bubbles. This step is especially important if you are going to throw on the wheel.
  2. Modelling: Work the clay directly by hand, with modelling tools or on a ceramic wheel. Keep the piece moist while working by adding water with a sponge if necessary.
  3. Drying: Allow the piece to dry in the air slowly and evenly (cover it with plastic if drying is too fast) to prevent cracks. Drying time varies depending on the thickness of the piece.
  4. First firing (bisque): Fire the dry piece in a ceramic kiln between 970 and 1050 °C. Make sure the piece is completely dry before placing it in the kiln.
  5. Glazing: Apply the desired ceramic glazes to the bisque-fired piece.
  6. Second firing: Fire again according to the instructions of the ceramic glaze used to set the finish.
  7. Storing leftover material: Wrap any unused clay in airtight plastic or return it to its original packaging to prevent it from drying out.

Usage tips

Avoid air bubbles

Air bubbles inside the clay can cause breakage during firing. Knead thoroughly (using the "spiral kneading" technique or by slamming the clay against a table) before modelling, especially if you are going to subject the piece to high temperatures.

Uniform thickness for crack-free drying

Try to keep the walls of your pieces as uniform in thickness as possible. Differences in thickness create stresses during drying that can cause cracks. For bulky pieces, consider hollowing out the inside before the final drying.

Optimal material storage

If the clay has hardened due to air exposure, you can revive it by gradually adding water and kneading. To keep it in perfect condition between sessions, wrap it in a damp cloth and then in a tightly sealed plastic bag. The 1.5 kg packaging comes vacuum sealed, which guarantees it arrives in optimum plasticity conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does the modelled piece need to be fired?

It is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended if you want a durable piece. Sio-2 ARGILA Red unfired is fragile and water-soluble. Firing between 970 and 1050 °C gives it hardness, strength and prepares it to receive ceramic glazes. For purely decorative pieces without functional use you can leave it to air dry, but it will not have the strength of a fired piece.

Can I use this clay with young children?

Yes. Sio-2 ARGILA Red complies with the European standard EN-71 and is certified as suitable for children aged 3 and above. As it is composed solely of natural clay and water, it contains no chemical additives or hazardous substances. Even so, adult supervision during use is recommended.

How long can I store unused clay?

In its original intact packaging, Sio-2 ARGILA Red has a minimum shelf life of two years and is considered a non-perishable product if the packaging is undamaged. Once opened, keep it wrapped airtight in plastic to prevent it from drying out. If it hardens, it can be recovered by adding water and kneading.

Does the red colour disappear after firing?

No. One of the standout features of Sio-2 ARGILA Red is that its raw colour persists after firing, resulting in a characteristic terracotta-red finish typical of red potter's clay. If you want a different finish colour, you can apply ceramic glazes.

What is the difference between this clay and a modelling paste or plasticine?

Sio-2 ARGILA Red is a 100% natural product, composed only of clay and water. Synthetic modelling pastes and plasticines contain additives, oils and polymers that prevent ceramic firing and alter their behaviour. ARGILA can be wheel-thrown, fired at high temperature and glazed like any traditional potter's clay, which is impossible with synthetic pastes.

Is it compatible with all ceramic glazes?

Yes. Its performance with commercial ceramic glazes is exceptional, thanks to its high purity and fine grind. Apply the glaze to the bisque-fired piece and carry out a second firing according to the glaze manufacturer's instructions.

Can I mix the red clay with white clay to obtain intermediate shades?

It is technically possible to mix clays from the same Sio-2 family to obtain tone variations. However, bear in mind that firing properties and glaze compatibility may vary slightly in mixtures. If you are looking for a pure white tone, we recommend the Arcilla Sio-2 ARGILA Blanca directly.

What is the difference between Sio-2 ARGILA and Sio-2 PLUS?

Both are natural potter's clays from the Sio-2 range, but with different formulations aimed at different uses and firing ranges. If you need a clay with other technical characteristics, check out the Arcilla Sio-2 PLUS Blanca or the Arcilla Sio-2 PLUS Terracota.
