Self-extinguishing fire-retardant latex for scenography. Flame retardant, highly durable and easy to apply for theatre, film and live events.

STAGESAFE is a fire-retardant latex specifically formulated for professional scenography in theatre, film, television and live events. Its flame-retardant additives make it self-extinguishing: if it catches fire, the flame goes out on its own and does not spread. It combines fire safety with high durability against wear, moisture and exposure to intense lighting — all common conditions in any stage production.

What it is used for

STAGESAFE is designed for scenic applications where fire safety regulations are a mandatory requirement. It provides a flexible, fire-retardant protective coating over a wide variety of substrates commonly used in production.

  • Fire-retardant coating of sets, flats and scenic panels
  • Protection of props made from polystyrene, cardboard or wood
  • Surface finishing of foam sculptures and figures for theatre and film
  • Creating flexible fire-retardant skins over models and three-dimensional structures
  • Application at indoor events where fire-retardant certification is required
  • Coating of fabrics, gauzes and textile materials used in stage productions
  • Complement to prosthetic latex foams in productions requiring additional fire protection

How to use it

  1. Shake the container vigorously before opening and before each use, as the fire-retardant additives tend to settle.
  2. Make sure the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free of dust, grease or dirt.
  3. Apply a first thin, even coat using a soft-bristle brush, foam roller or airless spray gun. Avoid excessive build-up in a single pass.
  4. Allow each coat to dry completely until the latex loses its whitish tone and becomes transparent. Drying time varies depending on coat thickness, temperature and ventilation.
  5. Apply as many additional coats as needed to achieve the desired thickness and coverage. For optimal fire-retardant protection, do not reduce the number of coats below what is recommended for your project.
  6. Allow to cure fully before handling, painting or assembling the scenic element.
  7. If you need to colour the final result, use paints specifically formulated for latex that maintain the flexibility of the coat.
Important notice: Shaking vigorously before each use is essential. The fire-retardant additives settle to the bottom of the container and, if not properly dispersed, the resulting coat may not meet the expected flame-retardant properties. Work in a well-ventilated space. Avoid prolonged inhalation of vapours during application and drying.

Usage tips

Thin, multiple coats are better than one thick coat

The key to achieving a uniform, effective fire-retardant film is to apply several thin coats rather than trying to cover in one go. Thick coats take longer to dry, tend to crack and can trap moisture inside, compromising both adhesion and fire-retardant properties. Allow each coat to lose its whiteness completely before applying the next.

Temperature and humidity affect drying

Latex dries by water evaporation, so environmental conditions are critical. At low temperatures or high humidity — common in prop stores or unheated stages — drying times increase considerably. Always work above 10 °C and ensure good ventilation. Never apply STAGESAFE on cold surfaces or surfaces with condensation.

Storage and container preservation

Seal the container tightly after each use. Water-based latex can form a dry film on the surface if left exposed to air, contaminating the rest of the product. Store at room temperature, away from heat sources and protected from freezing, as sub-zero temperatures irreversibly destroy the latex emulsion. If the product shows lumps or has lost homogeneity after shaking, do not use it.

Frequently asked questions

Does this latex comply with the fire safety regulations required in stage venues?

STAGESAFE has been specifically formulated to meet flame-retardancy requirements in stage environments. Its self-extinguishing behaviour prevents flame propagation. If you need specific technical documentation for a project, contact the Feroca team for more information on applicable certifications.

What materials can I apply this fire-retardant latex to?

STAGESAFE bonds well to a wide variety of porous and semi-porous substrates commonly used in scenography: wood, cardboard, fabrics, gauzes, expanded polystyrene (EPS foam), polyethylene foam and surfaces previously painted with water-based paints. On very smooth or non-porous substrates (hard plastics, metals), a prior adhesion test or suitable primer is recommended.

Can I paint over the fire-retardant latex once it is dry?

Yes. Once STAGESAFE is fully cured, you can apply paint on top to achieve the scenic finish you need. To maintain the flexibility of the coat and prevent cracking, use paints formulated for latex, such as Mask Paint by Monster Makers. Avoid enamel or solvent-based paints that may attack the latex emulsion.

How many coats need to be applied for effective fire-retardant protection?

The number of coats depends on the porosity of the substrate and the film thickness required by the project. As a general guideline, between 3 and 5 thin, fully dried coats are recommended to achieve complete fire-retardant coverage. On highly porous substrates such as untreated cardboard or wood, the first coats may be largely absorbed by the material, so more passes will be needed.

Is the fire-retardant latex flexible once dry?

Yes. STAGESAFE forms a flexible film that adapts to movement and deformation of the substrate, making it especially useful for articulated sets, props handled during performances and any piece subject to mechanical stress. This flexibility also prevents flaking caused by the temperature changes typical in stage venues.

Can it be diluted with water to make spray gun application easier?

Water-based latex can be moderately diluted with distilled water to adjust viscosity for airless spray gun applications. However, excessive dilution can reduce the dry film thickness and, consequently, the fire-retardant effectiveness. If you need to dilute, do so gradually and run tests on scrap material before working on the final piece.

What is the difference between this product and a conventional scenography latex?

The fundamental difference is the presence of fire-retardant additives in STAGESAFE's formulation. A conventional latex, such as RD-407 Masking Latex, is optimised for moulding, special effects finishes or cosmetic applications, but does not include fire protection. STAGESAFE sacrifices some of the transparency and tactile softness of a moulding latex in exchange for the safety properties required in live installations and performances.

Can the product be used outdoors?

STAGESAFE handles moisture and wear well under controlled indoor conditions. Outdoor use is possible for temporary installations, but prolonged exposure to direct rain, intense UV radiation or extreme temperature variations can degrade the latex coat over time. For long-term outdoor sets, consult the Feroca technical team for the best finishing and protection options.
