How to use it
- Prepare your workspace: work in a well-ventilated area on a level, protected surface. Put on the included gloves before you start.
- Weigh the components: the standard mix ratio for Jesmonite AC100 is 2.5 parts base powder to 1 part liquid by weight. Use the pipette to measure the liquid accurately.
- Add the pigment: incorporate the pigment into the liquid before mixing with the powder to achieve a uniform colour. The 6 pigments in the kit can be combined to extend the colour palette.
- Mix: pour the pigmented liquid onto the powder and stir with the mixing stick for 2–3 minutes, scraping the sides of the container, until you obtain a lump-free mixture of uniform consistency.
- Cast into the mould: pour the mixture into the included phone stand mould. Gently tap the mould against the work surface to release any air bubbles.
- Demould: wait for the piece to cure fully (time varies depending on ambient temperature; typically 30 to 60 minutes for initial demoulding). Carefully remove the piece from the mould.
- Final finishing: allow the piece to rest for at least 24 hours before sanding, painting or applying any surface treatment. You can sand dry or wet to achieve the desired finish.
Usage tips
Mix control
A well-homogenised mixture is key to avoiding weak spots in the final piece. Always mix by adding the liquid to the powder (not the other way around) and scrape the bottom of the container thoroughly. If you need more working time, you can slightly cool the liquid before mixing to slow down the cure.
Colour and finishes
The included pigments are specifically formulated for water-based acrylic resins. Start with small amounts (1–2 ml per 600 g of powder) and adjust until you reach the desired shade. For darker or more saturated finishes, add the pigment in several stages. Once cured, the piece can be sanded with wet-and-dry sandpaper, polished with polishing compound or waxed for a glossy finish.
Mould maintenance and reuse
The mould included in the kit is reusable. Clean it thoroughly after each use with water and mild soap — do not soak it in solvents. To ease demoulding and extend the mould's lifespan, you can apply a thin layer of release agent before each casting. If you later want to make your own moulds for use with Jesmonite AC100, Feroca's resin moulding kit is a great next step.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to work with this resin at home or in enclosed spaces?
Yes. Jesmonite AC100 is water-based and contains no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOC). This makes it considerably safer than conventional polyester or epoxy resins for indoor use. Even so, basic ventilation is recommended and you should wear the included gloves to avoid direct skin contact.
What mix ratio should I use?
The standard ratio for Jesmonite AC100 is 2.5 parts base powder to 1 part liquid, by weight. It is important to follow this ratio to ensure correct curing and the material's mechanical properties. Always use a scale rather than volumetric measurements for greater accuracy.
Can I use the pigments with other resins?
The pigments included in the kit are formulated for water-based acrylic resins such as Jesmonite AC100. Their behaviour in epoxy or other resin families may not be as expected. For other resins, consult the compatible pigments available in Feroca's catalogue.
How long does the piece take to cure?
Under normal conditions (20–25 °C), the piece can be demoulded 30 to 60 minutes after casting. Full cure, however, takes approximately 24 hours. Always wait this minimum time before sanding, painting or using the piece under load.
Is the included mould reusable?
Yes. The phone stand mould included in the kit can be used multiple times. Clean it with water and mild soap after each use and, if desired, apply a release agent before each casting to ease part removal and extend the mould's lifespan.
Can I add fillers to modify the appearance or weight?
Yes. Jesmonite AC100 accepts a wide variety of fillers such as sand, marble powder, metal powder or paste pigments, allowing you to imitate mineral, metallic or stone-like finishes with great fidelity. Fillers are added to the powder or to the final mixture, always within the filler limits recommended by the manufacturer to avoid compromising mechanical strength.
What do I do if I have leftover mixture?
Jesmonite AC100 has a limited pot life once mixed. If you have leftover material, pour it into a flat container so it cures in a controlled manner and dispose of it once solidified in accordance with local waste regulations. Do not pour uncured material down the drain.
Can I take the next step and work with larger formats of the same material?
Absolutely. Jesmonite AC100 is available in larger formats for production or larger-scale projects. Feroca distributes it in professional format: Jesmonite AC100 - Acrylic Resin for casting and laminating. You can also explore alternatives such as Acrystal Prima + Basic Crystal if you are looking for a similar water-based acrylic resin.
