Alumaluster 4oz (100ml): chrome paint with mirror effect, applicable with airbrush. High-reflectivity polished aluminium finish over a gloss black base.

Alumaluster is a chrome painting system that lets you achieve a polished aluminium mirror finish by applying directly with a standard airbrush or spray gun. Its formula based on special pigments and resin offers superior coverage and adhesion compared to conventional chrome paints, with results that in many cases require no final sealing coat.

What it's used for

Alumaluster is designed for any project that demands a high-definition metallic finish. It is especially popular in special effects, character work, prop making and scale modelling, but also used in vehicle customisation, decoration and replica manufacturing. Some common uses:

  • Cosplay helmets, armour and accessories with chrome metallic finish
  • Props and replicas for film, theatre and special effects
  • Resin, fibreglass or plastic parts requiring a metallic appearance
  • Customisation of motorcycle helmets, casings and decorative parts
  • Static scale modelling and miniature figures with fine-detail chrome finish
  • Sculptures and decorative objects with mirror effect

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: it must be clean, dry and free of dust or grease. For maximum shine, start from a gloss black base — you can use a black resin such as one of the larger volume versions or apply conventional gloss black paint.
  2. Shake the Alumaluster bottle well before use. The pigment and resin mixture must be homogeneous.
  3. Load the airbrush or spray gun with Alumaluster. If using an airbrush, a 0.3 to 0.5 mm nozzle gives good results; adjust pressure according to your equipment.
  4. Apply thin, even coats, maintaining the distance recommended for your equipment. Avoid build-up that may create drips.
  5. Allow to dry between coats. Observe the mirror effect: as coverage increases, the shine intensifies.
  6. Once satisfied with the finish, decide whether to apply a sealing coat. In many applications this is not necessary, but it protects the surface if the piece will be exposed to friction or handling.
Professional use: Alumaluster contains solvents. Always work in a well-ventilated space, use a respirator with organic vapour filter, safety goggles and gloves. Consult the SAFETY DATA SHEET before handling the product.

Usage tips

The black base makes all the difference

The mirror effect of Alumaluster depends directly on the quality of the base. The blacker and glossier the base, the greater the final reflectivity. If the piece is made of an intrinsically dark material (black resin, black foam), you can apply directly. If not, apply a gloss black primer coat and allow it to cure completely before applying Alumaluster.

Airbrush setup and thinning

Alumaluster is formulated to be used as-is, but if you find the viscosity does not suit your equipment well, you can adjust it with the appropriate thinner (consult the manufacturer's data sheets). Nozzles between 0.3 and 0.5 mm work well for detail work. For large pieces, a conventional gravity-feed spray gun speeds up the process. Always do a test on a scrap surface before applying to the final piece.

Sealing and durability

One of the advantages of Alumaluster is that in many situations you can leave the finish unsealed. Even so, if the piece will suffer friction, frequent handling or outdoor exposure, apply a protective varnish or lacquer compatible with solvent-based paint. Bear in mind that some varnishes may slightly alter the shine: always test on a discreet area first. If you want to maintain the mirror effect to the maximum, use a compatible gloss finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied with any airbrush?

Yes. Alumaluster is compatible with standard double-action airbrushes and conventional spray guns. A nozzle between 0.3 and 0.5 mm is sufficient for detail work. For large surfaces, a gravity-feed spray gun with a 0.8 to 1.0 mm nozzle speeds up application. Shake the product well before loading the equipment.

Is a gloss black base essential?

It is not essential, but it is highly recommended. The mirror effect of Alumaluster is greatly enhanced over a gloss black base. On light or matte surfaces the result is metallic, but it loses intensity and reflectivity. For professional results, always prepare the base with a fully cured gloss black coat.

Do I need to seal the finish after application?

In many applications it is not necessary. The Alumaluster formulation allows the finish to be left exposed directly. However, if the piece will receive friction, impacts or outdoor exposure, applying a compatible protective varnish is recommended. Always choose a gloss finish and test on a small area before covering the entire piece.

What materials can it be applied to?

Alumaluster adheres well to resins, plastics, fibreglass, foam (previously sealed), wood and any surface that has been prepared with a primer or gloss black paint. It is not recommended to apply directly to unsealed foams, as the solvents may attack the material.

How many coats are needed?

Generally 2 to 3 thin coats are enough to achieve a satisfactory mirror finish. The most important thing is to apply thin, even coats, allowing drying time between them. More coats do not always mean more shine: a correct application with fewer coats gives better results than building up paint.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

Alumaluster can be used outdoors, but to ensure durability it is recommended to protect it with a compatible exterior varnish. Prolonged exposure to sun and rain without protection can degrade the finish over time.

What is the difference between the 4oz format and larger formats?

The content is the same product. The 100 ml (4oz) format is ideal for small projects, finish tests or spot touch-ups. If you regularly work with Alumaluster or on larger surface projects, the 8oz (236ml), 16oz (473ml) or 32oz (946ml) formats are more cost-effective.

Is there a risk of the paint obscuring fine detail on the piece?

When applying thin coats with an airbrush, Alumaluster preserves fine detail very well. This is one of its key strengths compared to other chrome paints. The key is not to overload: multiple thin coats always rather than one thick coat.
