What it is used for

Aged Dark is designed to recreate old, darkened and coagulated blood. Its deep tone makes it the ideal choice when the effect requires a more sinister, aged or long-standing bleeding appearance. It is used in:

  • Aged wounds and scars with a dark wet look
  • Clot and dried blood effects on silicone or latex prosthetics
  • FX makeup for film, television and advertising
  • Theatre productions and live shows
  • Halloween events, LARP and realistic cosplay
  • Horror photo shoots and gore effects
  • Spatters, stains and drips on fabrics and props
  • Combining with Venous Medium for more natural tone transitions

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: make sure the skin or prosthetic is clean and free of excess grease.
  2. Apply the blood directly using the applicator, a brush, sponge or fingers depending on the effect you are going for.
  3. Shape the flow with the right tool: for drips, tilt the surface; for clots, build up the product in the area.
  4. To integrate it with a raised wound, combine it with a previously made-up silicone prosthetic and apply the blood as a final layer to add depth.
  5. For more complex tone layering, mix with Arterial Bright directly on the surface.
  6. When finished, remove from skin with soap and water. On fabrics, wash at 40 °C with detergent. Always do a prior test on delicate textiles.

Usage tips

Combine tones for greater realism

Real wounds feature different colours: arterial blood is bright and red, venous blood is darker, and old blood takes on almost brown tones. Layering Aged Dark over a base of Venous Medium or adding bright details with Arterial Bright gives you a much more convincing visual read on camera.

Flow and viscosity control

If you need greater fluidity for spatters or drip effects, you can dilute slightly with a few drops of water. If instead you want more body to simulate dense clots, apply a larger amount of product and let it build up naturally. Fleet Street Blood Paste is a good alternative for areas where you need a thicker gel.

Protect fabrics and surfaces before shooting

Although Aged Dark washes out of most fabrics at 40 °C, we recommend always doing a test on a fabric swatch before applying to final garments. On porous surfaces or props that cannot be washed, consider using a protective film base or accept that the effect may be permanent. If you need a blood that dries and stays fixed on surfaces, Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh or Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark are better options for long-lasting props.

Frequently asked questions

Does this artificial blood leave permanent stains on clothing?

On most fabrics, no. Aged Dark is water soluble and can be removed by washing at 40 °C with detergent. Even so, we recommend doing a prior test on a fabric swatch before use, especially on delicate, synthetic or light-coloured textiles.

Can it be applied directly on skin without any issues?

Yes. Aged Dark is formulated for direct use on skin. It removes easily with soap and water. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend doing a patch test on a small area before applying to larger areas.

How long can the effect last without drying out?

Aged Dark does not dry, so the wet effect is maintained throughout the entire shooting or performance session without the need to reapply. This makes it especially convenient for long takes or multi-take scenes.

Can it be mixed with other artificial bloods?

Yes. You can combine Aged Dark with Arterial Bright and Venous Medium from the same Clink St FX range to achieve more natural colour transitions and multi-layer effects.

Is it compatible with silicone and latex prosthetics?

Yes. Aged Dark can be applied over silicone and latex prosthetics without any issues. Its glossy texture integrates perfectly with the prosthetic surface and enhances the illusion of real wounds.

What is the difference between the three tones in the range?

The Clink St FX range offers three tones for different uses: Arterial Bright is the bright, intense red for fresh wounds and fresh bleeding; Venous Medium is a darker mid-tone simulating venous blood; and Aged Dark is the deepest, most darkened and aged tone, ideal for old blood, clots and long-standing wounds.

What should I use if I need blood that dries and stays fixed?

Aged Dark is designed not to dry. If you need a permanent effect on props, clothing or surfaces where the blood must stay fixed, we recommend Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh or Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark, formulated specifically to dry and remain on the surface.

How do I create a realistic raised wound to go with the blood?

The standard technique is to sculpt the wound in sulphur-free clay, make a silicone mould and cast skin silicone into the mould. Once the prosthetic is demoulded, it is made up with pigments and the blood is applied as a final layer to add depth and moisture to the effect. Aged Dark is perfect for that final stage.
