What it's used for

This set is designed to cover all stages of sculptural modelling: building volume, refining shapes, removing material, marking details and smoothing surfaces. It is a complete solution for sculpture, special effects, prototype making and creating masters for moulds.

  • Modelling figures and sculptures in workshop clay
  • Creating masters and originals for silicone or resin mould making
  • Working with modelling wax in jewellery and special effects
  • Defining textures and surface details on sculptural pieces
  • Removing and hollowing out material in hard-to-reach areas
  • Smoothing surfaces with a damp sponge on water-based clays
  • Clean cutting of material blocks with metal wire
  • Creating prototypes for composites, resins or silicones

How to use it

  1. Prepare the block of modelling material and condition your work surface.
  2. Use the metal wire to cut and divide large blocks of clay or wax with precision.
  3. Build up the overall volume by hand and use the spatula to add or redistribute material.
  4. Define the main shapes with the metal kidney, scraping and profiling curved surfaces.
  5. Use the large loop tool to remove material from interior areas or create depressions.
  6. Work finer details with the double-ended loop tool, using both ends according to the size of the detail.
  7. Use the needle tool to mark lines, textures or precise incisions.
  8. Refine the surface finish with the wooden kidney for smoother results.
  9. If working with water-based clay, use the damp sponge to smooth and unify the surface before drying.
  10. Once the master is complete, you can proceed to mould making with silicone or any other suitable moulding material.

Usage tips

Keep tools clean between materials

If you work with different types of clay or wax, clean the metal tools thoroughly before switching materials. Residue from one material can contaminate the next and affect the surface finish. A slightly damp cloth is sufficient for most clays; for wax, use a warm dry cloth.

The metal wire — an ally for masters

The metal wire is not just for cutting: you can also tension it between two fixed points and slide a block of clay across it to obtain flat, perfectly levelled sections. This is especially useful when you need to regularise the base of a master before placing it on the moulding board.

Match the tool to the stage of work

Don't use the needle tool for large volumes, or the spatula for fine details. Always start with the larger-surface tools (spatula, large loop tool) and progressively move to smaller, more precise ones (double-ended loop tool, needle tool) as you advance in the level of detail. This saves time and prevents distorting areas already worked.

Frequently asked questions

What modelling materials do these tools work with?

The SIO-2 Modelling Set is compatible with the vast majority of modelling materials commonly used in the workshop: water-based clays, air-dry clays, polymer clays, modelling waxes and synthetic pastes. The metal tools are particularly effective on harder or firmer materials, while the sponge and wooden kidney are ideal for softer or wetter clays.

Are they suitable for creating masters for silicone moulds?

Yes. In fact, that is one of the most common uses in a professional workshop. These tools allow you to work the original to the level of detail needed to achieve a quality master onto which moulding silicone can be poured. A well-finished master ensures the mould captures all details faithfully.

Can I use these tools directly with resins or silicones?

These tools are designed for the modelling phase, not for applying liquid resins or silicones. For laminating or working with resins, use specific tools such as laminating rollers or spatulas suitable for reactive systems. For mixing and dispensing resins, a casting ladle or other dispensing tools are appropriate.

How many tools does the set include and which ones?

The set includes 8 tools: sponge, metal kidney, large loop tool, spatula, double-ended loop tool, needle tool, metal wire and wooden kidney. Each one is designed for a specific function within the modelling process.

How do I clean and maintain the metal tools?

Clean the metal tools after each use with a dry or slightly damp cloth, depending on the material used. Avoid leaving them soaking or exposed to prolonged moisture to prevent oxidation. If working with waxes, a warm dry cloth removes residue with ease. Store them in a dry, protected place to extend their service life.

Are these tools enough for a beginner sculptor?

This set covers both the basic and advanced needs of sculptural modelling, making it suitable for beginners and professionals alike who are looking for a complete kit. If you ever need tools with more specific geometries, the Tiranti modelling tools are a natural complement to this set.

Where can I get technical assistance on modelling materials?

You can contact the Feroca technical team by calling 914 481 271, writing to [email protected] or through Feroca's social media channels. They will guide you on which material to use for your project and how to get the most out of your tools.

Does Feroca ship throughout Spain?

Feroca ships to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. For the Canary Islands, the service is provided through distributor Adhesivos TNK.
